Title

Players react to a coach's call and move laterally with proper footwork to field ground balls on both forehand and backhand sides.

Compilation

If this video stacks several distinct drills back-to-back, split it into individual, draggable drills — each with its own clip, steps, and tags.

Coach's take

Great for building: Lateral agility, quick twitch reaction to verbal cues, and proper ground ball fielding mechanics (glove-side and backhand).

Builds toward Quickly reaching optimal fielding position for ground balls hit to either side, enabling clean transfers and strong throws to first base.

What it is

Players line up facing a coach. The coach calls out a color or direction, and each player reacts by shuffling laterally with proper footwork while staying in a fielding position. The coach hits or rolls ground balls, and players field on both the forehand and backhand sides, emphasizing quick lateral movement and proper glove positioning for each direction.

What it practices

Reactive lateral footwork for ground-ball fielding. Players groove quick foot shuffles, balanced weight transfer, and proper knee bend while fielding on both sides of their body.

Focuses on improving

Builds footwork consistency and reaction speed for infielders who struggle with lateral positioning or hesitation on backhand ground balls. Develops the muscle memory for quick weight shift and glove readiness on both sides.

How to run it

5-8 reps per player for 2-3 rounds, rotating players as needed.

Setup

  1. 1Place a home plate or mark a starting spot for the player.
  2. 2Arrange three colored cones (blue, yellow, purple) in an arc 5-7 feet around the home plate.
  3. 3The player stands at home plate in an athletic ready position with their glove on.
  4. 4The coach stands 10-15 feet in front of the player with a bucket of baseballs.

Run the drill

  1. 1Coach calls out one of the cone colors (e.g., "Blue!").
  2. 2Player quickly shuffles or cross-steps to the designated cone, moving their feet to get into fielding position.
  3. 3As the player arrives at the cone, the coach soft-tosses a ground ball towards the cone.
  4. 4Player fields the ground ball cleanly with eyes on the ball and glove out front.
  5. 5Player secures the ball, stands up, and shuffles back to the home plate starting position.

Coaching cues

  • Quick feet!
  • Eyes on the ball!
  • Glove out front!
  • Stay low!
  • Attack the ball!
  • Get to the cone first!
  • Backhand if needed!

Common mistakes

  • Standing too tall while fielding, not getting low to the ground.
  • Waiting for the ball instead of moving feet to get in front of it.
  • Not adjusting footwork for backhand plays, leading with the wrong foot.
  • Taking eyes off the ball before it's securely in the glove.

Progressions

  • Increase the distance of the cones from home plate.
  • Vary the speed or bounce of the soft-toss to simulate different ground balls.
  • Require players to make a quick throw to a target (e.g., a net or another coach) after fielding.
  • Call out two colors in a row, requiring the player to move between cones before fielding.
  • Use different types of balls (e.g., tennis balls, wiffle balls) to vary bounce and feel.
