Title

Player works through an agility ladder between ground ball fielding reps to sharpen footwork and ground-ball exchange rhythm.

Compilation

If this video stacks several distinct drills back-to-back, split it into individual, draggable drills — each with its own clip, steps, and tags.

Coach's take

Great for building: Integrated quick-twitch footwork, athletic fielding posture, and efficient glove-to-throw transition immediately following dynamic movement.

Builds toward Smoothly fielding ground balls after agile movements and making quick, accurate throws to any base, enabling plays a grade up.

What it is

A player runs footwork drills through an agility ladder, alternating feet in the ladder squares. Between or during ladder work, the player fields ground balls rolled or tossed from short range. The ladder reinforces quick, controlled foot placement and weight transfer — mechanics that carry directly into fielding position and glove-to-throw exchange.

What it practices

Footwork timing and foot speed during ground-ball approach. Glove-to-throw transition from a stable, narrow base refined by ladder footwork patterns.

Focuses on improving

Targets infielders who drift or overstride on ground balls, or who lose balance during the fielding-to-throwing sequence. Builds foot quickness and lateral control under live fielding pressure.

How to run it

5-10 reps per player, rotating through the line.

Setup

  1. 1Place an agility ladder flat on the ground.
  2. 2Position a coach or feeder 10-15 feet in front of the end of the ladder, ready to roll/hit ground balls.
  3. 3Players line up at the start of the agility ladder, wearing gloves.

Run the drill

  1. 1Player executes a specified footwork pattern through the agility ladder (e.g., two feet in each rung, lateral shuffle).
  2. 2Upon exiting the ladder, the player immediately gets into an athletic fielding position.
  3. 3The coach/feeder rolls or hits a ground ball towards the player.
  4. 4The player fields the ground ball cleanly, securing it in their glove.
  5. 5The player executes a quick and accurate throw back to the coach or a designated target.

Coaching cues

  • Quick feet through the ladder!
  • Stay low out of the ladder!
  • Watch the ball all the way in!
  • Soft hands!
  • Gather and throw!

Common mistakes

  • Standing up too tall immediately after exiting the ladder.
  • Not getting into a low, athletic fielding position for the ground ball.
  • Looking up too early on the throw, causing inaccuracy.
  • Slow glove-to-hand transfer, resulting in a delayed throw.

Progressions

  • Vary the agility ladder footwork patterns (e.g., single-foot, cross-over).
  • Increase the speed or difficulty of the ground balls rolled/hit by the coach.
  • Add a specific target for the throw (e.g., a bucket or another player).
  • Require a quicker release on the throw, simulating double play turns or close plays.
