Compilation

Builds toward Developing the range and quickness to field hard-hit line drives in the gaps or down the lines as an outfielder.

How to run it

Perform 5-8 reps to each side, then switch with another player.

Setup

  1. 1Place 4-5 cones in a straight line, approximately 3-4 feet apart.
  2. 2Player stands in fielding ready position in the middle of the cones.
  3. 3Coach stands 10-15 feet in front of the player, with a bucket of balls.

Run the drill

  1. 1Coach calls out a direction (left or right).
  2. 2Player shuffles laterally to that side, maintaining a low athletic stance.
  3. 3After two lateral shuffle steps, the coach throws a line drive at the player's glove side.
  4. 4Player takes two quick steps towards the ball, fields it cleanly, and secures it.
  5. 5Player returns to the starting position.

Coaching cues

  • Stay low, knees bent.
  • Quick feet, don't cross your ankles.
  • Glove out front, eyes on the ball.
  • Soft hands.

Common mistakes

  • Standing too upright, not staying in an athletic stance.
  • Crossing feet during the shuffle, leading to imbalance.
  • Not getting the glove down early enough on ground balls or line drives.
  • Taking eyes off the ball just before contact with the glove.

Progressions

  • Increase the distance between cones to demand more ground coverage.
  • Vary the speed and height of the thrown ball (ground ball, line drive).
  • Add a crow hop and throw back to the coach after fielding.
