Title
Catcher practices blocking pitches in the dirt by reacting to throws and using body positioning to keep balls in play.
Compilation
If this video stacks several distinct drills back-to-back, split it into individual, draggable drills — each with its own clip, steps, and tags.
Coach's take
Great for building: Quick-twitch reaction, proper body position and glove angle for blocking pitches in the dirt, absorbing impact with chest protector.
Builds toward Preventing passed balls in competitive games, giving pitchers confidence to throw breaking pitches, holding baserunners.
What it is
A catcher in full gear positions in front of home plate or a blocking net. A coach or partner throws balls into the dirt from the pitcher's mound or close range. The catcher reacts to each throw, shifts weight, and uses glove and body to block the ball rather than field it cleanly, simulating game situations where dirt pitches must be contained.
What it practices
Blocking footwork and weight transfer in response to low pitches. Glove and body positioning to smother balls in the dirt and prevent passed balls.
Focuses on improving
Builds blocking technique for catchers who allow too many passed balls on pitches below the strike zone. Trains reactive blocking mechanics under game conditions.
How to run it
Perform 3-4 sets of 5-7 blocks from each starting stance (kneeling and secondary squat).Setup
- 1Catcher in full gear positions themselves at home plate, 5-8 feet from where the coach will throw.
- 2Coach stands 10-15 feet in front of the catcher with a bucket of baseballs (or tennis balls).
- 3Coach aims to throw balls directly into the dirt in front of the catcher, varying location and bounce.
Run the drill
- 1Catcher assumes either a primary kneeling stance or a secondary squat stance.
- 2Coach throws a ball into the dirt towards the catcher.
- 3Catcher immediately drops hips, tucks chin, brings glove between knees, and covers the five-hole, forming a strong wall with their body.
- 4Catcher's body acts as a barrier, absorbing the impact and keeping the ball within arm's reach.
- 5Catcher quickly recovers the ball and resets to the ready position for the next rep.
Coaching cues
- Drop and cover!
- Chin to chest, eyes on the ball!
- Glove down and out!
- Keep it in front, smother the ball!
- Attack the bounce!
Common mistakes
- Catchers turning their body or head away from the ball upon impact.
- Not bringing the glove down to cover the five-hole, allowing the ball to slip through legs.
- Allowing the ball to get past them or rebound too far away, enabling runners to advance.
- Not getting low enough with the chest protector to absorb the impact effectively.
Progressions
- Increase the velocity or unpredictability of the thrown balls.
- Introduce game-like scenarios with baserunners, requiring a quick recovery and potential throw after blocking.
- Add a weighted ball or soft medicine ball for strength and impact absorption.
- Force quick transitions between blocking and throwing to a base.
