Title

Second baseman practices fielding ground balls from four angles (soft forehand, soft backhand, hard forehand, hard backhand) using an X-pattern setup to develop proper angle cuts, footwork, and throws to first base.

Compilation

If this video stacks several distinct drills back-to-back, split it into individual, draggable drills — each with its own clip, steps, and tags.

Coach's take

Great for building: Smooth glove-to-hand exchange with efficient footwork and proper body alignment for optimal throwing angles on various ground balls and double play pivots.

Builds toward Consistently turning double plays (4-6-3), effectively covering bases on bunts and steals, and making accurate throws from all fielding positions, allowing players to perform at a higher level defensively.

What it is

Player starts at the center of an X marked in the dirt with cones or fielding discs. Coach hits or tosses ground balls to all four quadrants—soft to the forehand side, soft to the backhand side, hard to the forehand side, and hard to the backhand side. For each ball, the player executes a prep step, hops into proper position, fields the ball with correct footwork and body mechanics, and throws to first base. The X visual teaches the player to adjust his approach angle based on ball speed and direction.

What it practices

Proper approach angles for different ground ball trajectories, prep-step footwork and timing, moving through the baseball with a low, controlled fielding position, and executing a strong throw to first base from various field positions. Player learns to keep the ball on the right side of his body, stay low through the catch, and maintain an uphill arm path on all throws.

Focuses on improving

Targets second basemen who need to develop range awareness and efficient routing on ground balls. Builds footwork consistency and throwing accuracy when approaching ground balls from different angles, essential for making routine plays and turning double plays at second base.

How to run it

Perform 3 sets of 8-10 reps per drill variation. Rotate players through each drill station for 5-10 minutes.

Setup

  1. 1Routine Ground Balls: Player stands facing the coach, about 10-15 feet away. Two nets are placed behind the coach, representing first base.
  2. 2Creating Angles (X-Drill): Place 4 cones or fielding discs in an 'X' pattern on the ground, with the player starting in the center of the 'X' facing the coach, approximately 10-15 feet away.
  3. 3Double Play Flips: Place cones or discs in a straight line, simulating the line from second base to the pitcher's mound. Player stands on the central disc, facing the coach (who simulates the shortstop).
  4. 4Receiving Double Plays: Place a base or plate on the ground to represent second base. Player stands on the outside part of the base, facing the coach (who simulates the shortstop).
  5. 5Bunt Coverage & Tag Plays: Player stands in their second base defensive position, cheating slightly towards first base. Coach stands about 10-15 feet away, simulating a batter or throwing a ball for tag plays. A base is placed for second base.

Run the drill

  1. 1Routine Ground Balls: Coach rolls a ground ball to the player. Player executes a prep step, moves through the ball, fields it to their right side, then performs a right-left footwork pattern to throw to first base (net).
  2. 2Creating Angles (X-Drill): Coach rolls a ground ball to one of the cones/discs (soft glove side, soft backhand side, hard forehand, hard backhand). Player reads the ball, takes an angle to 'beat' the ball to its destination, fields it, and makes a simulated throw.
  3. 3Double Play Flips: Coach rolls a ground ball to the player at second base. Player fields the ball, gets their feet squared towards the imaginary shortstop, and performs either a 'palm-up flip' (for balls hit straight/slightly right) or a 'power flip' (for balls hit slightly left), following through towards the target.
  4. 4Receiving Double Plays: Coach throws a ball to the player at second base, simulating a throw from shortstop. Player positions their left foot on the outside edge of the base, catches the ball, executes a jab step with their right foot to clear the runner, and makes a strong simulated throw to first base.
  5. 5Bunt Coverage & Tag Plays: Coach either bunts a ball (for coverage) or throws a ball (for tag plays). For bunt coverage, player sprints to cover first base if the first baseman fields, or receives a throw at second for a force out if the pitcher/catcher fields. For tag plays, player sprints to the inside lane of second base, receives the ball, and practices tagging an imaginary runner, ensuring they clear the runner's path.

Coaching cues

  • Routine Ground Balls: "Prep step!", "Move through the ball!", "Right-left, throw!", "Stay low and smooth!", "Uphill throw to first!"
  • Creating Angles (X-Drill): "Read the hop!", "Beat the ball!", "Attack!", "Hands out front!", "Glove to target!"
  • Double Play Flips: "Feet towards second!", "Palm up!", "Tuck glove!", "Follow the flip!", "Explode through!", "Handshake flip!"
  • Receiving Double Plays: "Left foot on the outside!", "Jab and throw!", "Clear the runner!", "Hands out!", "See the ball, catch the ball, throw the ball!", "Two, two, two!" (for communication)
  • Bunt Coverage & Tag Plays: "Ball first, then bag!", "Sprint to the base!", "Get inside!", "Quick tag!", "Clear the runner!", "Right hip to the ball!"

Common mistakes

  • Sitting back on heels for routine ground balls, leading to flat-footed fielding and slow transfers.
  • Not taking appropriate angles on ground balls, forcing awkward fielding positions or rushed throws.
  • Flicking the ball without proper body rotation on double play flips, resulting in weak or inaccurate throws.
  • Standing in the runner's path on double play turns or tag plays, creating interference or injury risk.
  • Failing to communicate or look up on double plays and bunt coverage, leading to missed plays or errors.

Progressions

  • Increase the speed of the rolled balls to simulate harder hit balls.
  • Introduce multiple balls in quick succession to challenge reaction time.
  • Add a live runner for double plays and tag plays to increase pressure and realism.
  • Vary the starting position of the player (e.g., deeper infield, closer to first base) for different scenarios.
  • Incorporate live batting for bunt coverage drills to test reading the batter's intentions.

[00:02] There's much more to playing second base than taking an unders sized player with
[00:04] than taking an unders sized player with a weak arm and sticking them at second
[00:06] a weak arm and sticking them at second base. Hey, you have to have quick feet.
[00:08] base. Hey, you have to have quick feet. You do have to have a strong arm. We're
[00:10] You do have to have a strong arm. We're working on relays. We're working on
[00:11] working on relays. We're working on getting to the base on tags. We're
[00:13] getting to the base on tags. We're working on having range. So, playing
[00:15] working on having range. So, playing second base isn't easy. Here's how you
[00:17] second base isn't easy. Here's how you play second base. So, now we're going to
[00:19] play second base. So, now we're going to talk about the routine ground ball.
[00:20] talk about the routine ground ball. You're going to do everything that you
[00:22] You're going to do everything that you did at shortstop. You're going to move
[00:23] did at shortstop. You're going to move your feet. You're going to move through
[00:25] your feet. You're going to move through the ball. You're going to have a good
[00:26] the ball. You're going to have a good prep step. You're going to get around
[00:28] prep step. You're going to get around the ball. We're going to work on our
[00:30] the ball. We're going to work on our right, left, timing, right, left throw.
[00:32] right, left, timing, right, left throw. So, everything is the same as the ball's
[00:34] So, everything is the same as the ball's coming to you. We're not sitting back on
[00:36] coming to you. We're not sitting back on our heels just because we have more
[00:38] our heels just because we have more time. Just because it's a shorter throw
[00:40] time. Just because it's a shorter throw doesn't mean we can sit back on the
[00:42] doesn't mean we can sit back on the baseball and just flick it. We're doing
[00:45] baseball and just flick it. We're doing everything we need to do to get ready to
[00:47] everything we need to do to get ready to move through the baseball and make a
[00:49] move through the baseball and make a good throw to first base.
[00:57] Now, coaching tip. Making sure that we're getting into that good solid prep
[00:59] we're getting into that good solid prep step. Making sure we're getting in that
[01:01] step. Making sure we're getting in that right left time. We're getting keeping
[01:02] right left time. We're getting keeping the ball to our right side, pushing
[01:04] the ball to our right side, pushing through, and staying straight on
[01:11] line. Notice how he's staying nice and low and through the ball. He's not
[01:12] low and through the ball. He's not standing straight up and throwing
[01:14] standing straight up and throwing downhill. He's staying nice and smooth.
[01:17] downhill. He's staying nice and smooth. He's moving through the baseball. He's
[01:19] He's moving through the baseball. He's staying low. He's making good uphill
[01:21] staying low. He's making good uphill throws to first
[01:27] base. Now, we're going to talk about angles. We created an X in the dirt. You
[01:30] angles. We created an X in the dirt. You can use cones. You can use fielding
[01:32] can use cones. You can use fielding discs. We're going to start in the
[01:34] discs. We're going to start in the center of the X. And what this is
[01:36] center of the X. And what this is showing us is a visual of if it's hit
[01:39] showing us is a visual of if it's hit soft to my glove side, I'm going to take
[01:41] soft to my glove side, I'm going to take an angle this way. If it's hit soft to
[01:43] an angle this way. If it's hit soft to my backhand side, I'm going to go this
[01:46] my backhand side, I'm going to go this way. If it's it hard to my forehand
[01:48] way. If it's it hard to my forehand side, I'm now going to create an angle
[01:50] side, I'm now going to create an angle back. And if it's hard to my backhand
[01:52] back. And if it's hard to my backhand side, I'm going to do the same thing.
[01:54] side, I'm going to do the same thing. I'm going to take an angle back so I can
[01:56] I'm going to take an angle back so I can beat the ball where it's going. So, this
[01:58] beat the ball where it's going. So, this is a great drill to work on all four
[02:01] is a great drill to work on all four different types of angles. So, soft,
[02:04] different types of angles. So, soft, soft, hard, hard. So, it's going to look
[02:07] soft, hard, hard. So, it's going to look just like this. We're going to prep
[02:08] just like this. We're going to prep step. We're going to get ready. We're
[02:10] step. We're going to get ready. We're going to hop. And then we're going to
[02:11] going to hop. And then we're going to move to the baseball. Here we So, the
[02:13] move to the baseball. Here we So, the first one we're going to do is our our
[02:14] first one we're going to do is our our soft hit ball to our forehand side.
[02:16] soft hit ball to our forehand side. You're going to notice he's still
[02:17] You're going to notice he's still getting around the ball. He's working
[02:19] getting around the ball. He's working through it. It's kind of just a soft hit
[02:21] through it. It's kind of just a soft hit ground ball. Kind of more routine. We're
[02:24] ground ball. Kind of more routine. We're just moving through. We're attacking.
[02:25] just moving through. We're attacking. So, we're taking an an angle straight
[02:27] So, we're taking an an angle straight ahead opposed to going this way and
[02:30] ahead opposed to going this way and wasting time. This one here, we're going
[02:32] wasting time. This one here, we're going to go to our a soft hit to our backhand
[02:34] to go to our a soft hit to our backhand side. We're still going to get around
[02:36] side. We're still going to get around it, but we're going to attack it and
[02:37] it, but we're going to attack it and beat it where it's going.
[02:43] You can backhand it or you can forehand it depending on the hops and depending
[02:45] it depending on the hops and depending on where it is. Sometimes you can get
[02:47] on where it is. Sometimes you can get around it, beat through, push through
[02:49] around it, beat through, push through and throw it on the run. So these are
[02:51] and throw it on the run. So these are all different types of styles on the
[02:53] all different types of styles on the same type of ball. It's hit soft, but
[02:56] same type of ball. It's hit soft, but he's reading the runner and he's also
[02:58] he's reading the runner and he's also depending on what he's doing with his
[03:00] depending on what he's doing with his glove side. This one he's just going to
[03:02] glove side. This one he's just going to catch it and just make a routine catch,
[03:04] catch it and just make a routine catch, shuffle, and throw. So he's beating it
[03:06] shuffle, and throw. So he's beating it there, fielding it, and making a throw.
[03:09] there, fielding it, and making a throw. He's cutting the angle off of the
[03:11] He's cutting the angle off of the baseball. So, he's going to be able to
[03:12] baseball. So, he's going to be able to have more time to get the runner out
[03:15] have more time to get the runner out opposed to getting out and around,
[03:17] opposed to getting out and around, killing time and space from the runner.
[03:19] killing time and space from the runner. This one here, we're going forehand.
[03:21] This one here, we're going forehand. We're going forehand. We're going to try
[03:23] We're going forehand. We're going to try to beat it to the wall. So, we're going
[03:24] to beat it to the wall. So, we're going to make sure we're angling back. The V
[03:27] to make sure we're angling back. The V right now, the at the X parts, our left
[03:29] right now, the at the X parts, our left side, we're going backwards and we're
[03:30] side, we're going backwards and we're trying to cut this ball off. Here we go.
[03:32] trying to cut this ball off. Here we go. Hard hit ball. Boom. We're taking it
[03:35] Hard hit ball. Boom. We're taking it back so we have time. Banging. we can
[03:37] back so we have time. Banging. we can make a good play towards first base.
[03:39] make a good play towards first base. Here it is again. Let's see what this
[03:41] Here it is again. Let's see what this one that one's harder. He's got a
[03:43] one that one's harder. He's got a forehand one-handed. We're doing that
[03:45] forehand one-handed. We're doing that also on that same ball. Sometimes they
[03:47] also on that same ball. Sometimes they might spin on that. They may catch it,
[03:50] might spin on that. They may catch it, but they're going away. Then they're
[03:52] but they're going away. Then they're just going to regroup their feet, get
[03:54] just going to regroup their feet, get underneath them, and make a throw. So,
[03:56] underneath them, and make a throw. So, these are all different
[03:58] these are all different types of plays, all going towards the
[04:01] types of plays, all going towards the same side. But again, depending on the
[04:03] same side. But again, depending on the runner, depending on the speed, we're
[04:06] runner, depending on the speed, we're making throws, making plays, we have
[04:08] making throws, making plays, we have time to do stuff. Now, we're going
[04:10] time to do stuff. Now, we're going backhand side. So, we're taking our
[04:12] backhand side. So, we're taking our angle back. We're trying to beat it to
[04:13] angle back. We're trying to beat it to the wall. It's going to be a hard hit
[04:15] the wall. It's going to be a hard hit ball up the middle. We don't want to cut
[04:16] ball up the middle. We don't want to cut the angle off. We got to get back and we
[04:18] the angle off. We got to get back and we got to get back hard. We're setting our
[04:20] got to get back hard. We're setting our feet and making good throws. Here we go.
[04:25] feet and making good throws. Here we go. There we go. There we go. Let's go. Come
[04:27] There we go. There we go. Let's go. Come on. You're too easy. Let's get diving.
[04:35] Boom. Got him. Nice. All right. Here we go. Now, we're going to challenge our
[04:36] go. Now, we're going to challenge our player. He's doing the same X drill, but
[04:38] player. He's doing the same X drill, but he doesn't know where the balls are
[04:40] he doesn't know where the balls are going to be hit. So, it's all about the
[04:41] going to be hit. So, it's all about the prep step. It's about being ready. And
[04:43] prep step. It's about being ready. And we're going to one of the field discs.
[04:46] we're going to one of the field discs. We just don't know which one it's going
[04:47] We just don't know which one it's going to be. Let's read the baseball. Here it
[04:56] goes. Nice. That one was to his backhand side. Here's a forehand side. That's a
[04:57] side. Here's a forehand side. That's a routiner. We're cutting down the time in
[04:59] routiner. We're cutting down the time in the space. Staying nice and low. That
[05:01] the space. Staying nice and low. That was good. We're gonna prep step. Read
[05:03] was good. We're gonna prep step. Read the baseball. See where it's at. Oh,
[05:04] the baseball. See where it's at. Oh, that Oh, that's a that's a toughy right
[05:06] that Oh, that's a that's a toughy right there. That was kind of a baby layout. I
[05:08] there. That was kind of a baby layout. I would have had it, but it's that was
[05:10] would have had it, but it's that was good effort.
[05:16] Here we go. Now, we're going to work on our double play flips. So, I took our
[05:19] our double play flips. So, I took our cones and our fielding discs and I put
[05:21] cones and our fielding discs and I put them in a straight line. This is our
[05:23] them in a straight line. This is our neutral position. So, I'm going to be in
[05:25] neutral position. So, I'm going to be in this position. You'll see the lines
[05:26] this position. You'll see the lines going from me straight to home plate.
[05:29] going from me straight to home plate. When the ball's hit straight at me,
[05:31] When the ball's hit straight at me, we're going to palm up flip. When the
[05:33] we're going to palm up flip. When the ball's hit to the right of the neutral
[05:35] ball's hit to the right of the neutral line, same exact thing, palm up flip. If
[05:39] line, same exact thing, palm up flip. If the ball's hit one foot to two feet to
[05:41] the ball's hit one foot to two feet to the left, I'm going to work around it
[05:43] the left, I'm going to work around it and I'm going to work on my power flip.
[05:46] and I'm going to work on my power flip. And if the ball's hit to the fielding
[05:47] And if the ball's hit to the fielding disc, that's taking me away. That's when
[05:50] disc, that's taking me away. That's when I'm going to field, pop my feet, and
[05:52] I'm going to field, pop my feet, and make a good throw to second. So, the
[05:53] make a good throw to second. So, the first one we're going to work on is just
[05:55] first one we're going to work on is just the palm up flips. We're getting around
[05:57] the palm up flips. We're getting around it. We're fielding it. Palm up flips.
[05:59] it. We're fielding it. Palm up flips. We're making sure that we're shaking his
[06:01] We're making sure that we're shaking his hand at second base. We're tucking our
[06:03] hand at second base. We're tucking our glove so it's out of the way. And we're
[06:05] glove so it's out of the way. And we're going to follow our flip. It's going to
[06:06] going to follow our flip. It's going to look just like this. He's going to stand
[06:08] look just like this. He's going to stand on that discs. He's looking at to see
[06:10] on that discs. He's looking at to see where the baseball is. That's hit
[06:12] where the baseball is. That's hit straight to him. That's a palm up. Palm
[06:15] straight to him. That's a palm up. Palm up. Flipping right at him. Moving his
[06:17] up. Flipping right at him. Moving his feet. He's getting ready. He's feeling
[06:19] feet. He's getting ready. He's feeling it. Teaching point on this. When I'm in
[06:22] it. Teaching point on this. When I'm in my position and I feel the ball, so I
[06:25] my position and I feel the ball, so I see the baseball, I'm in my position.
[06:27] see the baseball, I'm in my position. When I feel it, notice if I were to draw
[06:30] When I feel it, notice if I were to draw a line from my left foot to my right
[06:32] a line from my left foot to my right foot, it's going straight towards second
[06:34] foot, it's going straight towards second base. So, I'm not getting my feet in
[06:36] base. So, I'm not getting my feet in this position like I'm going this way.
[06:39] this position like I'm going this way. Instead, my feet are left, right, and
[06:42] Instead, my feet are left, right, and I'm turning and I'm flipping and I'm
[06:44] I'm turning and I'm flipping and I'm following this way. So now I'm trying to
[06:46] following this way. So now I'm trying to picture the ball over my right hip, my
[06:49] picture the ball over my right hip, my right knee, so I can continue to go to
[06:51] right knee, so I can continue to go to the right side. So watch Tyler now feel
[06:53] the right side. So watch Tyler now feel it off the right side more. Get around
[06:56] it off the right side more. Get around it and palm up flip. Boom. Good. Make
[07:00] it and palm up flip. Boom. Good. Make sure we're tucking that glove so it's
[07:01] sure we're tucking that glove so it's out of the way. We're making sure we're
[07:03] out of the way. We're making sure we're showing the ball and everything is nice
[07:05] showing the ball and everything is nice and
[07:06] and smooth. Now make sure when you flip it
[07:09] smooth. Now make sure when you flip it that you follow. You don't just flip and
[07:11] that you follow. You don't just flip and hold. You flip and follow. Here we go.
[07:19] There it is right there. So, the coaching cue, the teaching point is when
[07:22] coaching cue, the teaching point is when you're after you feel the baseball, you
[07:24] you're after you feel the baseball, you want to think about driving, but then
[07:27] want to think about driving, but then shaking the hand of the shorts stop.
[07:30] shaking the hand of the shorts stop. That's making everything stay in this
[07:31] That's making everything stay in this line opposed to any sort of ball going
[07:35] line opposed to any sort of ball going back, wrist flicks to try to get power.
[07:38] back, wrist flicks to try to get power. Instead, it's stiff arm, handshake, and
[07:40] Instead, it's stiff arm, handshake, and follow. Stiff arm, handshake, and
[07:42] follow. Stiff arm, handshake, and follow. Here we go. Routine ball. He's
[07:45] follow. Here we go. Routine ball. He's fielding it. Stiff arm handshake and
[07:47] fielding it. Stiff arm handshake and follow. Boom. There it
[07:55] is. Nice. And notice that flip. It's taking me right at my glove shoulder so
[07:56] taking me right at my glove shoulder so I can explode through the base, clear
[07:59] I can explode through the base, clear out, and get back on target. He's not
[08:02] out, and get back on target. He's not throwing the balls over here to where
[08:04] throwing the balls over here to where now all of a sudden I'm getting stuck
[08:05] now all of a sudden I'm getting stuck with the runner. It's glove shoulder.
[08:08] with the runner. It's glove shoulder. Boom. I can clear out and I can get back
[08:10] Boom. I can clear out and I can get back on target. What the power flip's going
[08:12] on target. What the power flip's going to look like is I'm in my position. I
[08:15] to look like is I'm in my position. I see the ball. It's a little bit to my
[08:16] see the ball. It's a little bit to my left. I'm moving around. After I feel
[08:19] left. I'm moving around. After I feel it, I'm pushing
[08:21] it, I'm pushing off and darting the ball to my target.
[08:24] off and darting the ball to my target. So, watch it in full speed. I'm getting
[08:26] So, watch it in full speed. I'm getting around it. I see it and I'm pushing off.
[08:29] around it. I see it and I'm pushing off. Notice how my body's exploding to
[08:31] Notice how my body's exploding to second. I'm not just feeling it and
[08:33] second. I'm not just feeling it and trying to just use my arm. I'm using my
[08:36] trying to just use my arm. I'm using my legs. Boom. And I'm pushing off. And
[08:38] legs. Boom. And I'm pushing off. And again, I'm extending towards second
[08:40] again, I'm extending towards second base. Let's see it, Tyler. He's going to
[08:43] base. Let's see it, Tyler. He's going to feel it and push off towards me. Boom.
[08:45] feel it and push off towards me. Boom. That way, the body's extending forward.
[08:48] That way, the body's extending forward. He's extending to where he wants to flip
[08:55] it. Perfect. Yeah. Good. Now, we're going to talk about popping our feet.
[08:56] going to talk about popping our feet. Now, the ball's taking me further to my
[08:58] Now, the ball's taking me further to my left, and I can't quite power flip it.
[09:00] left, and I can't quite power flip it. So, I'm getting my feet around. I'm
[09:03] So, I'm getting my feet around. I'm fielding. I'm popping my feet. I'm
[09:05] fielding. I'm popping my feet. I'm staying low and I'm throwing this baby
[09:07] staying low and I'm throwing this baby uphill to my target. So, it's a catch,
[09:10] uphill to my target. So, it's a catch, pop, and throw. I'm hopping. Boom. I see
[09:13] pop, and throw. I'm hopping. Boom. I see it. I'm getting into a good position,
[09:16] it. I'm getting into a good position, and it's smooth. I'm staying nice and
[09:18] and it's smooth. I'm staying nice and low. I'm rotating, getting an uphill p
[09:21] low. I'm rotating, getting an uphill p uphill throw, hitting them right in the
[09:22] uphill throw, hitting them right in the glove
[09:29] shoulder catch, pop. Good. Oh, there you go. Keep. That's better. Just keep that
[09:31] go. Keep. That's better. Just keep that solid base. That's all. Solid base with
[09:33] solid base. That's all. Solid base with your legs. That was good. Catch, pop.
[09:36] your legs. That was good. Catch, pop. Good base.
[09:43] clears, pop his feet, gets me outside, back on target. Here we go. Now, we're
[09:45] back on target. Here we go. Now, we're going to turn double plays at second
[09:47] going to turn double plays at second base. So, I have a couple fielding discs
[09:48] base. So, I have a couple fielding discs here. One is the runner sliding into the
[09:51] here. One is the runner sliding into the bag. So, the second baseman can
[09:54] bag. So, the second baseman can visualize staying out of the base
[09:56] visualize staying out of the base runner's attack towards second base. The
[09:58] runner's attack towards second base. The second fielder's disc is on the back
[10:01] second fielder's disc is on the back part of the bag, closest to the second
[10:03] part of the bag, closest to the second baseman. That's where I want my left
[10:05] baseman. That's where I want my left foot to go. So, our left foot is going
[10:07] foot to go. So, our left foot is going on the outside part of the base right
[10:09] on the outside part of the base right here because now on a throw that's
[10:12] here because now on a throw that's taking me away from first base. I'm
[10:15] taking me away from first base. I'm still in a good position. If I attack
[10:18] still in a good position. If I attack straight on and that bullet's a little
[10:20] straight on and that bullet's a little bit offline, it's going to cross me up
[10:22] bit offline, it's going to cross me up and I'm not going to be able to turn it.
[10:24] and I'm not going to be able to turn it. So, my left foot is going on the
[10:26] So, my left foot is going on the fieldielder's disc. I'm my hands are
[10:28] fieldielder's disc. I'm my hands are out. I'm looking at my shorts stop. He's
[10:30] out. I'm looking at my shorts stop. He's going to feed the ball to me on a good
[10:33] going to feed the ball to me on a good throw. I'm going to catch it. I'm going
[10:35] throw. I'm going to catch it. I'm going to jab with my right and the ball's
[10:38] to jab with my right and the ball's going to come out. If he leads me
[10:40] going to come out. If he leads me towards my forehand or the inside lane,
[10:42] towards my forehand or the inside lane, I'm going to take my right foot. I'm
[10:44] I'm going to take my right foot. I'm going to explode in
[10:45] going to explode in front and I'm going to make my throw. Or
[10:49] front and I'm going to make my throw. Or he might take me to my left side to
[10:52] he might take me to my left side to where I might just jab back to make sure
[10:54] where I might just jab back to make sure I get clearance to turn it. And fourth,
[10:57] I get clearance to turn it. And fourth, he might throw it to my right. If he
[11:00] he might throw it to my right. If he throws it away from me, I'm jabbing with
[11:02] throws it away from me, I'm jabbing with my right foot again to the baseball. I'm
[11:04] my right foot again to the baseball. I'm resetting and I'm throwing. So, I'm
[11:07] resetting and I'm throwing. So, I'm taking my right hip and I'm attacking
[11:10] taking my right hip and I'm attacking the baseball and the throw with my right
[11:12] the baseball and the throw with my right hip. Left foot's on the base and it's
[11:15] hip. Left foot's on the base and it's either at me, it's across the bag, or
[11:19] either at me, it's across the bag, or it's away from me. So, my my right foot
[11:22] it's away from me. So, my my right foot is always attacking the baseball on the
[11:25] is always attacking the baseball on the throw. So, on this one, this is a
[11:27] throw. So, on this one, this is a routine double play turn right at me.
[11:29] routine double play turn right at me. I'm just going to jab with my right
[11:30] I'm just going to jab with my right foot. So, I'm in this position. All I'm
[11:32] foot. So, I'm in this position. All I'm doing is jabbing and the ball's coming
[11:34] doing is jabbing and the ball's coming right out. So, I'm seeing the ball. I'm
[11:37] right out. So, I'm seeing the ball. I'm just jabbing to regroup my
[11:39] just jabbing to regroup my feet and the ball's coming out straight
[11:42] feet and the ball's coming out straight ahead. This time, the ball's going to
[11:44] ahead. This time, the ball's going to take me away. But since I'm on the back
[11:46] take me away. But since I'm on the back side of the bag, it's just going to look
[11:47] side of the bag, it's just going to look like this. My left foot's
[11:50] like this. My left foot's on and I'm already in a good cleared
[11:53] on and I'm already in a good cleared position. Notice if I started in this
[11:55] position. Notice if I started in this position, I'd be stuck doing this. But
[11:58] position, I'd be stuck doing this. But instead, I'm on the outside easily. I
[12:01] instead, I'm on the outside easily. I can adjust to that throw. And this one's
[12:03] can adjust to that throw. And this one's going to lead me inside. Watch where my
[12:05] going to lead me inside. Watch where my right foot takes me. My left foot's on.
[12:07] right foot takes me. My left foot's on. I clear
[12:08] I clear inside. Now notice every time I catch
[12:11] inside. Now notice every time I catch the baseball, I'm planting off my right,
[12:15] the baseball, I'm planting off my right, exchanging, and throwing off my left. So
[12:17] exchanging, and throwing off my left. So it's fast. It's
[12:19] it's fast. It's just So every time it's just boom. I'm
[12:22] just So every time it's just boom. I'm not seeing the ball, catching the ball,
[12:26] not seeing the ball, catching the ball, and then moving. Everything is happening
[12:28] and then moving. Everything is happening at the same exact time. One more
[12:30] at the same exact time. One more routiner. Here I
[12:33] routiner. Here I am and I'm just popping my feet and I'm
[12:35] am and I'm just popping my feet and I'm cleared from the runner.
[12:38] cleared from the runner. Two to two.
[12:40] Two to two. Notice the importance. The importance of
[12:42] Notice the importance. The importance of calling 222. The ground balls hit to the
[12:45] calling 222. The ground balls hit to the shortstop. His eyes are glued on the
[12:47] shortstop. His eyes are glued on the hitter. His eyes are glued on the
[12:49] hitter. His eyes are glued on the contact. When he hears 2-2, it reminds
[12:52] contact. When he hears 2-2, it reminds him this is the play. My second base is
[12:55] him this is the play. My second base is going to be at the bag. I'm going to
[12:57] going to be at the bag. I'm going to second base. Oftent times the second
[12:59] second base. Oftent times the second baseman doesn't call anything. Now the
[13:01] baseman doesn't call anything. Now the shorts up gets it. He looks maybe the
[13:02] shorts up gets it. He looks maybe the second base isn't even covering and now
[13:04] second base isn't even covering and now I just get stuck holding the ball and
[13:05] I just get stuck holding the ball and he's safe all over the place. Or I
[13:07] he's safe all over the place. Or I forgot that there was a runner on first.
[13:10] forgot that there was a runner on first. Maybe I catch it and I just go straight
[13:12] Maybe I catch it and I just go straight to first with it. Instead hearing that
[13:14] to first with it. Instead hearing that good communication, loud communication
[13:17] good communication, loud communication from my second baseman. 22 two. Boom. I
[13:21] from my second baseman. 22 two. Boom. I see the ball. I catch it. I know right
[13:22] see the ball. I catch it. I know right where I'm going with the baseball. Here
[13:24] where I'm going with the baseball. Here we go. Oh, now we have runners on first
[13:25] we go. Oh, now we have runners on first and second. As a second baseman, we have
[13:28] and second. As a second baseman, we have to make sure we're cheating a little bit
[13:30] to make sure we're cheating a little bit cuz the first baseman is crashing the
[13:32] cuz the first baseman is crashing the bunt, trying to get the force out of
[13:34] bunt, trying to get the force out of third base. But if not, it's our
[13:36] third base. But if not, it's our responsibility now to cover first base.
[13:39] responsibility now to cover first base. So, we're cheating over a little bit. We
[13:41] So, we're cheating over a little bit. We see the bunt. We know our first baseman
[13:43] see the bunt. We know our first baseman is charging. I have to sprint to the
[13:46] is charging. I have to sprint to the bag. It's going to look just like this.
[13:47] bag. It's going to look just like this. So, we see the batteries squaring. First
[13:50] So, we see the batteries squaring. First baseman charging. We're sprinting over.
[13:52] baseman charging. We're sprinting over. My left foot's on the base. I'm on the
[13:54] My left foot's on the base. I'm on the inside lane. I see the ball and I'm
[13:57] inside lane. I see the ball and I'm catching it. Notice how my feet aren't
[13:59] catching it. Notice how my feet aren't like this. Now I'm in the running lane
[14:01] like this. Now I'm in the running lane right here. And all of a sudden, I'm
[14:02] right here. And all of a sudden, I'm doing this. It's clear, easy for the
[14:05] doing this. It's clear, easy for the catcher to see the ball. Boom. I'm
[14:07] catcher to see the ball. Boom. I'm stepping and I'm catching and I'm
[14:09] stepping and I'm catching and I'm getting out of
[14:16] there. Good. Take that right leg and just kind of step to the ball with it.
[14:24] B. Good. This time, remember, as a second baseman, we're always playing
[14:27] second baseman, we're always playing ball first. Where our attack isn't just
[14:30] ball first. Where our attack isn't just we see him square, we're sprinting over.
[14:33] we see him square, we're sprinting over. Because if we push bunch of ball right
[14:34] Because if we push bunch of ball right in here, that's my ball. So, we see him
[14:38] in here, that's my ball. So, we see him square, we're sprinting over. We're
[14:39] square, we're sprinting over. We're playing this first cuz if it's this
[14:42] playing this first cuz if it's this ball, he's coming back and I'm flipping
[14:44] ball, he's coming back and I'm flipping or the pitcher is going to be covering
[14:46] or the pitcher is going to be covering most likely and I'm going to be flipping
[14:48] most likely and I'm going to be flipping to the pitcher. So, we always have to
[14:50] to the pitcher. So, we always have to make sure we're playing ball first and
[14:52] make sure we're playing ball first and then we're playing bag. Go
[15:00] hunt. Tag plays. I think they're a little bit harder at second base because
[15:03] little bit harder at second base because you have to get inside and clear the
[15:07] you have to get inside and clear the runner. What I mean by that is so often
[15:09] runner. What I mean by that is so often times you'll see this. You'll see them
[15:11] times you'll see this. You'll see them run to second, but they stay on the
[15:13] run to second, but they stay on the outside. Now, they get stuck here. They
[15:15] outside. Now, they get stuck here. They catch it, but the runner's here. So the
[15:17] catch it, but the runner's here. So the balls hit the runner's back. They're not
[15:19] balls hit the runner's back. They're not in position to catch. So you have to
[15:21] in position to catch. So you have to clear and get on the inside lane. So
[15:24] clear and get on the inside lane. So when I see it and I'm going, I have to
[15:26] when I see it and I'm going, I have to get myself inside so that I can then
[15:29] get myself inside so that I can then work back through. I can't stay back
[15:31] work back through. I can't stay back here and try to expect the ball to take
[15:34] here and try to expect the ball to take the perfect bouncer through cuz this is
[15:35] the perfect bouncer through cuz this is the lane where the runner's going. So I
[15:37] the lane where the runner's going. So I have to sprint inside, get my feet set
[15:41] have to sprint inside, get my feet set so I can regroup myself. It's going to
[15:43] so I can regroup myself. It's going to look just like this. Go.
[15:50] Good. Now, notice right here, I have the fielding disc. I want his left foot to
[15:52] fielding disc. I want his left foot to be on the inside lane because a lot of
[15:55] be on the inside lane because a lot of times we'll clear, but if my feet get
[15:57] times we'll clear, but if my feet get stuck here, look what happens on my tag.
[15:59] stuck here, look what happens on my tag. I'm not cl I'm not tagging the runner
[16:01] I'm not cl I'm not tagging the runner anymore. I'm back tagging the base. So,
[16:04] anymore. I'm back tagging the base. So, I want to make sure I'm clearing and I'm
[16:05] I want to make sure I'm clearing and I'm getting on the inside lane of that base.
[16:19] going boom. Now, let's talk about some strategy. If there's a lefty up, there's
[16:21] strategy. If there's a lefty up, there's a good chance his pull side is to me.
[16:24] a good chance his pull side is to me. So, the shorts stop's going to cover.
[16:26] So, the shorts stop's going to cover. When a righty's up, his pull side is
[16:28] When a righty's up, his pull side is that side of the field. So, as a second
[16:30] that side of the field. So, as a second baseman, I'm going to cover. So,
[16:33] baseman, I'm going to cover. So, depending on the batter is a good gauge
[16:35] depending on the batter is a good gauge on which player is going to cover the
[16:37] on which player is going to cover the bag on a steel. My bag. My bag.
