Title

Softball drill demonstrating infield footwork and positioning for receiving outfield throws at second base.

Compilation

If this video stacks several distinct drills back-to-back, split it into individual, draggable drills — each with its own clip, steps, and tags.

Coach's take

Great for building: Infielders' footwork, body positioning, and glove-to-tag mechanics for throws from the outfield.

Builds toward Executing quick, efficient tags on runners advancing to second base from the outfield, preventing extra bases or completing double plays.

What it is

This is a softball drill, not baseball. The video shows an infielder working on receiving footwork and positioning when taking throws from the outfield at second base during cutoff and relay situations.

What it practices

The drill trains footwork positioning, glove work, and receiving mechanics for relay throws from the outfield.

Focuses on improving

Builds proper relay positioning and footwork for infielders who need to secure throws from outfielders on cutoff and relay plays.

How to run it

5-7 throws from each outfield position (RF, CF, LF) per player.

Setup

  1. 1Place a second base bag on the infield dirt.
  2. 2A player positions themselves near the second base bag, ready to receive throws.
  3. 3A coach or another player stands in various outfield positions (e.g., RF, CF, LF) with baseballs.

Run the drill

  1. 1The outfielder throws a ball towards second base.
  2. 2The player at second base shuffles or moves to get in line with the throw, keeping their feet active.
  3. 3Receive the ball, allowing for a natural sweep down towards the base for a tag.
  4. 4Immediately apply a tag to the side of the second base bag, simulating a runner sliding in.
  5. 5Reset to the ready position for the next throw.

Coaching cues

  • Active feet!
  • Glove down early.
  • Catch and sweep.
  • Quick tag to the side of the bag.

Common mistakes

  • Standing flat-footed and not anticipating the throw's trajectory.
  • Reaching for the ball instead of moving to get in front of it, leading to missed catches or poor tags.
  • Catching the ball and then pausing before making the tag.
  • Tagging the top of the bag instead of the side where a runner would slide.

Progressions

  • Add a live runner sliding into the base.
  • Introduce communication calls with the 'outfielder' (e.g., 'Cut!', 'Four!').
  • Vary the throw trajectory (short hops, high throws).
  • Incorporate a relay man between the outfield and second base.
