Title

Players field soft-toss ground balls from a low stance between cones, focusing on keeping the glove out front and low.

Compilation

If this video stacks several distinct drills back-to-back, split it into individual, draggable drills — each with its own clip, steps, and tags.

Coach's take

Great for building: Maintains low fielding posture and 'soft hands' through the ball, preventing bad hops and increasing fielding consistency.

Builds toward Fields routine ground balls cleanly and confidently, setting up quicker transfers and accurate throws to bases.

What it is

A player positions themselves in a low fielding stance behind a line of cones. A coach soft-tosses ground balls in front of the player, who fields each ball cleanly, keeping their glove in front of the cones and staying low. The player then resets for the next ball.

What it practices

This drill trains maintaining a low fielding posture, soft hands, and keeping the glove in front of the body on ground balls. It reinforces fundamental infield glove work.

Focuses on improving

It targets players who struggle with fielding ground balls cleanly, stand up too tall, or bring their glove too far back, preventing bad hops from eating them up.

How to run it

Run 2-3 sets of 10-15 ground balls per player.

Setup

  1. 1Place 5-7 cones in a straight line on the ground, shoulder-width apart, forming a 'gate' for the player's glove.
  2. 2The player stands in a ready fielding stance directly behind the cone line.
  3. 3A coach stands approximately 10-15 feet in front of the player with a bucket of baseballs.

Run the drill

  1. 1The coach soft-tosses a ground ball towards the player's glove.
  2. 2The player fields the ball, ensuring their glove hand remains out front, between the cones.
  3. 3The player maintains a low fielding posture throughout the entire play.
  4. 4After fielding, the player resets to the starting position behind the cones for the next ball.

Coaching cues

  • Stay low!
  • Glove out front, between the cones!
  • Soft hands!
  • See the ball into the glove!
  • Don't stand up too soon!

Common mistakes

  • Standing up before or during fielding the ball.
  • Bringing the glove back behind the cone line, which can lead to glove shy fielding.
  • Having stiff hands, causing the ball to bounce off the glove.
  • Not tracking the ball all the way into the glove.
  • Not getting the glove to the ground early enough.

Progressions

  • Increase the speed of the soft-toss to simulate harder hit balls.
  • Vary the placement of the ground balls (slightly to the left or right, or directly at them).
  • Have players take a small step towards the ball instead of just standing still.
  • After fielding, add a quick transfer from glove to bare hand and a short toss to a target bucket.
