Title

Fielder practices rapid glove-to-hand transfer and immediate release on ground balls with focus on minimizing dead time between catch and throw.

Compilation

If this video stacks several distinct drills back-to-back, split it into individual, draggable drills — each with its own clip, steps, and tags.

Coach's take

Great for building: Glove-to-throw exchange speed and soft hands for fielding ground balls cleanly.

Builds toward Making quick plays on hard-hit ground balls, effectively turning double plays, and making accurate throws from the infield.

What it is

A fielder fields a ground ball and executes a quick glove-to-throw transition, emphasizing the speed of the exchange from fielding to release. The drill focuses on the footwork and hand mechanics needed to get the ball out cleanly without delay. Repetition builds muscle memory for the exchange under game-speed conditions.

What it practices

Glove-to-hand transfer mechanics and quick-release throwing. Trains the footwork and upper-body timing required to minimize the gap between fielding and throwing on ground balls.

Focuses on improving

Targets infielders who slow down the exchange or take extra steps between catch and throw, reducing double-play timing and force-out opportunities. Builds the hand speed and exchange efficiency critical to turning double plays and throwing out runners from short distances.

How to run it

3 sets of 8-10 reps per player.

Setup

  1. 1Place a small agility square or use four cones to create a square on the ground.
  2. 2Player stands inside the square in an athletic fielding ready position, glove open.
  3. 3Coach or partner stands 10-15 feet in front of the player with a bucket of baseballs.

Run the drill

  1. 1Coach rolls a soft ground ball to the player's glove side.
  2. 2Player fields the ball, keeping their glove out front and eyes on the ball through the catch.
  3. 3Immediately after fielding, player performs a quick glove-to-hand exchange.
  4. 4Player simulates a throw, stepping towards an imaginary target.
  5. 5Player returns to the ready position inside the square for the next rep.

Coaching cues

  • Soft hands!
  • Glove out front!
  • Quick exchange!
  • See it all the way!
  • Stay athletic!

Common mistakes

  • Stopping the ball with the glove and then bringing it to the body for the exchange, slowing the process.
  • Sitting back on heels instead of staying athletic and moving slightly to meet the ball.
  • Not getting down low enough to field the ball cleanly, leading to scoops or errors.
  • Looking up prematurely before the ball is securely in the throwing hand.

Progressions

  • Increase the speed or vary the angle of the rolled ground balls.
  • Add a second ball rolled immediately after the first, requiring an even quicker reset.
  • Have the player move laterally a few steps before fielding the ball.
  • Require an actual throw to a target or partner for older, more skilled players.
