Title
Player runs through an agility ladder with rapid foot patterns to build leg speed and footwork coordination.
Compilation
If this video stacks several distinct drills back-to-back, split it into individual, draggable drills — each with its own clip, steps, and tags.
Coach's take
Great for building: Rapid foot turnover, coordination, and change-of-direction quickness essential for explosive baseball movements.
Builds toward Accelerating quickly out of the batter's box, stealing bases efficiently, and improving fielding range to make more plays.
What it is
A single player moves through an agility ladder laid on the ground, stepping into each square with quick, controlled footwork patterns. The drill emphasizes rapid ground contact and lateral/linear foot placement. The ladder is marked on turf or field surface.
What it practices
Develops foot speed, ground contact rhythm, and lateral footwork coordination. Builds explosive leg drive and nimbleness for fielding transitions and base-running acceleration.
Focuses on improving
Targets players needing faster first-step quickness in the field and on the bases. Addresses sluggish footwork that slows fielding-throwing exchanges and base-running efficiency.
How to run it
Perform 2-3 passes of each footwork pattern. Complete 2-3 total sets, resting briefly between sets.Setup
- 1Lay an agility ladder flat on a firm, even surface like a sidewalk or outfield grass.
- 2Ensure enough space at both ends for players to approach and finish the drill.
Run the drill
- 1Quick Feet Forward: Stand at one end of the ladder. Step with both feet quickly into the first square, then both feet into the second square, continuing this pattern down the entire ladder.
- 2Lateral Shuffle: Stand facing sideways to the ladder. Step your lead foot into the first square, then bring your trailing foot to meet it. Step your lead foot out of the square, then your trailing foot out. Immediately move to the next square and repeat, shuffling down the ladder.
- 3In-Out Ladder Run: Start with feet straddling the first rung. Step your right foot into the first square, then your left foot into the same square. Quickly step your right foot out to the right, then your left foot out to the left (straddling the next rung). Repeat this in-out pattern moving down the ladder.
Coaching cues
- Light feet!
- Quick steps!
- Pump your arms!
- Stay on the balls of your feet!
- Eyes up!
Common mistakes
- Stepping on the rungs of the ladder, indicating lack of foot control.
- Shuffling through slowly or with heavy feet, reducing agility benefit.
- Not engaging arms, which are crucial for rhythm and balance.
- Looking down at feet instead of forward.
Progressions
- Increase the speed of execution for each pattern.
- Add a sprint for 5-10 yards immediately after completing the ladder.
- Call out different footwork patterns to perform randomly as the player approaches the ladder.
