Title
Player works through an agility ladder footwork pattern, then fields a ground ball and executes a throw to a base.
Compilation
If this video stacks several distinct drills back-to-back, split it into individual, draggable drills — each with its own clip, steps, and tags.
Coach's take
Great for building: Quick-twitch footwork, soft fielding hands, and efficient glove-to-hand transfer under dynamic movement.
Builds toward Making quick, clean plays on challenging ground balls and getting the ball out of the glove with an accurate throw, improving defensive range and speed.
What it is
Player sprints through an agility ladder with rapid foot placement, exits the ladder into fielding position, fields a ground ball with proper mechanics, and throws to a base. The drill chains footwork activation directly into game-speed fielding and throwing under movement.
What it practices
Agility ladder footwork timing and coordination, ground-ball fielding approach from a moving start, glove-to-throw transition under game tempo.
Focuses on improving
Builds foot quickness and body control for infielders who field from stationary positions or have sluggish first-step reads. Trains the fielding-throwing sequence under movement fatigue.
How to run it
5-7 reps per player, then rotate positions.Setup
- 1Place an agility ladder on the ground.
- 2The coach stands 10-15 feet in front of the end of the ladder, holding baseballs.
- 3Players line up at the start of the agility ladder.
Run the drill
- 1Player performs quick footwork through the agility ladder (e.g., two feet in each rung, lateral shuffle).
- 2As the player exits the ladder, the coach rolls a ground ball toward them.
- 3Player fields the ground ball cleanly with soft hands and gets low.
- 4Player makes a quick glove-to-hand transfer.
- 5Player throws the ball back to the coach.
- 6Player returns to the end of the line for the next rep.
Coaching cues
- Quick feet!
- Stay low!
- Soft hands!
- Smooth transfer!
- Target the chest!
Common mistakes
- Taking choppy, heavy steps through the ladder instead of light, quick feet.
- Standing too tall when fielding the ball, not getting their hips down.
- Using stiff hands, causing the ball to pop up or be bobbled.
- Slow or choppy transfer from glove to throwing hand.
- Throwing off balance or without proper mechanics after fielding.
Progressions
- Make it easier: Roll slower grounders, use a softer or larger ball (e.g., tennis ball).
- Make it harder: Roll harder grounders or short hops, add a crow hop before throwing, use different ladder footwork patterns, require a specific target for the throw.
