Title
Outfielder practices drop-step footwork to track fly balls over the shoulder, then transitions to reset and move laterally to track follow-up balls.
Compilation
If this video stacks several distinct drills back-to-back, split it into individual, draggable drills — each with its own clip, steps, and tags.
Coach's take
Great for building: Initial drop step technique, reading fly ball trajectory, and post-catch body and eye orientation for a quick throw.
Builds toward Tracking deep fly balls effectively and making immediate, accurate throws to cutoff men or bases from the outfield.
What it is
An outfielder starts on flat ground. The coach throws fly balls over the player's shoulder. On each rep, the outfielder drops their first step in the direction of the ball, plants, and tracks the flight. After the catch, the player resets with a head whip and cuts across the field to reset position for the next incoming ball.
What it practices
Drop-step footwork for tracking over-the-shoulder fly balls and crow-hop / transition mechanics between catches. Head position and plant-and-cut foot patterns to change direction efficiently after the catch.
Focuses on improving
Builds route-running efficiency and spatial awareness for outfielders who hesitate on fly balls or slow to reset between multiple consecutive plays. Reps the initial first step that commits the outfielder to the correct pursuit angle.
How to run it
3-5 sets of 3 balls per player, alternating drop step sides for each set.Setup
- 1Place a cone or marker to designate the starting position for the player.
- 2Player stands facing the coach, roughly 10-15 yards from the coach, in an athletic ready stance.
- 3Coach stands with a bucket of baseballs, ready to toss fly balls.
Run the drill
- 1Coach throws a high fly ball over the player's head, forcing a drop step to either the left or right.
- 2Player executes a drop step, turns their hips, and runs to track and catch the ball over their shoulder.
- 3After securing the catch, the player drops the ball and immediately whips their head and shoulders around to orient towards an imaginary target (simulating a throw to the infield).
- 4Player quickly returns to the starting cone/marker and gets ready for the next ball.
- 5Repeat the sequence for 2-3 balls, alternating the direction of the drop step.
Coaching cues
- Drop step!
- Track the ball all the way!
- Glove high, over your head!
- Turn and look for the target!
- Fast feet to the ball!
Common mistakes
- Shuffling backward instead of turning and dropping the lead foot to gain ground.
- Running directly under the ball and waiting, instead of moving through the catch.
- Not getting the glove up high enough to catch the ball at its highest point.
- Staring at the ground or the ball after the catch, delaying the turn and look towards the target.
Progressions
- Increase the distance the player has to run by throwing balls deeper.
- Vary the direction and depth of the fly balls more unpredictably.
- Add a live throw to a target (e.g., coach or a second cone) after the catch and turn.
- Introduce a second player as a cutoff man for the throw.
