Title
First baseman kneels at the bag and fields low throws and short hops, focusing on receiving accuracy and glove work on the ground.
Compilation
If this video stacks several distinct drills back-to-back, split it into individual, draggable drills — each with its own clip, steps, and tags.
Coach's take
Great for building: Receiving short-hop throws (picks) with soft hands and proper glove extension.
Builds toward Cleanly fielding bad throws at first base, preventing errors and turning close plays into outs.
What it is
First baseman assumes a kneeling position at first base. A partner throws low balls and short hops from the pitcher's mound or infield, simulating errant throws and ground-ball bounces. The fielder receives the ball with soft hands and glove control, staying low through the catch.
What it practices
Low-throw receiving and short-hop fielding at first base. Glove positioning and soft hands for balls arriving below the belt.
Focuses on improving
Builds first baseman's ability to field low and off-target throws from infielders, reducing errors on ground-ball double-play feeds and pitcher-cover plays.
How to run it
3 sets of 10-15 picks per first baseman.Setup
- 1Place a first base bag (or marker) on the ground.
- 2First baseman kneels on one knee with their glove ready, positioned near the bag to receive a throw.
- 3Thrower stands 10-15 feet away from the first baseman, holding a bucket of baseballs.
Run the drill
- 1Thrower lobs a short-hop baseball toward the first baseman's glove side, aiming for a pick.
- 2First baseman extends their glove out to scoop the short hop cleanly with soft hands.
- 3After catching, the first baseman drops the ball and resets their kneeling position for the next throw.
Coaching cues
- Soft hands.
- Glove down early.
- See the ball all the way in.
- Absorb the ball.
- Extend out, not back.
Common mistakes
- Stabbing at the ball with stiff hands instead of scooping.
- Not getting the glove down early enough to meet the hop.
- Pulling the glove back too soon after contact, causing the ball to pop out.
- Allowing the ball to bounce off the heel of the glove.
Progressions
- Increase the throwing distance.
- Vary the velocity and trajectory of the throws to simulate different types of hops.
- Have the first baseman start standing and drop to one knee before the pick.
- Throw slightly off to either side, forcing lateral glove adjustment.
