Title
Pitcher lifts lead leg, breaks hands, and holds front foot off the ground to build hand-break timing and sync the delivery.
Compilation
If this video stacks several distinct drills back-to-back, split it into individual, draggable drills — each with its own clip, steps, and tags.
Coach's take
Great for building: Synchronized hand break timing with lead leg lift and single-leg balance for pitcher's mound delivery.
Builds toward A consistent, repeatable pitching delivery and improved command by establishing early-stage body control and timing.
What it is
Pitcher stands in stance and lifts lead leg while breaking hands, keeping the front foot from making contact with the ground. The drill isolates the hand-break moment from the full stride to train timing and upper/lower body separation without the distraction of landing mechanics.
What it practices
Hand-break timing and upper/lower body separation during the stride phase. Trains the pitcher to initiate the arm path while the lower body remains controlled and suspended.
Focuses on improving
Pitchers with late hand breaks or who collapse their upper body into their lower body during delivery. Builds synchronization between leg lift, hand break, and arm slot alignment.
How to run it
Perform 3 sets of 8-10 repetitions.Setup
- 1Place a small disc or cone on the ground.
- 2Player stands with their plant foot (back foot for right-handers, front foot for left-handers) on the disc.
- 3Player holds the baseball in their glove, ready to start the pitching motion.
Run the drill
- 1Player lifts their lead leg into the highest point of the leg lift.
- 2Simultaneously, the player breaks their hands, separating the ball from the glove.
- 3Hold the position briefly, ensuring the lead foot does not touch the ground.
- 4Bring the lead leg back down and hands together to the starting position.
Coaching cues
- Lift and separate!
- Stay tall and balanced.
- Keep lead foot up, don't rush down.
- Hands break as leg lifts.
Common mistakes
- Lead foot touching the ground before the rep is complete.
- Hands breaking too early or too late relative to the leg lift.
- Losing balance and swaying off the disc.
- Not achieving a full, controlled leg lift.
Progressions
- Hold the top position (leg lift and hand break) for 2-3 seconds to build balance.
- Increase the speed of the lift and separate motion.
- Add a light plyo ball in the glove hand for added resistance during separation (if appropriate for age/strength).
