Title

This drill trains quick lateral footwork and clean glove work for infielders, fielding multiple ground balls in succession.

Compilation

If this video stacks several distinct drills back-to-back, split it into individual, draggable drills — each with its own clip, steps, and tags.

Coach's take

Great for building: Quick lateral footwork to get into a proper fielding position and a fast glove-to-throw exchange.

Builds toward Fielding tough ground balls cleanly on the move and making quick, accurate throws across the infield.

What it is

A player fields ground balls rolled by a coach while moving laterally between two markers. The player focuses on quick shuffles and precise glove presentation to field balls to their left and right.

What it practices

This drill practices lateral agility, proper fielding mechanics with soft hands, and developing a quick glove-to-hand exchange for throws.

Focuses on improving

It targets deficiencies in quick reaction time, footwork to get into a low fielding position, and consistent clean fielding of ground balls.

How to run it

Perform 2-3 sets of 5-8 balls to each side per player.

Setup

  1. 1Place two cones or markers approximately 3-4 feet apart to define the fielding zone.
  2. 2A feeder stands 10-15 feet in front of the cones with a bucket of baseballs.
  3. 3The fielder starts in an athletic fielding stance, centered between the two cones.

Run the drill

  1. 1The feeder rolls a ground ball to the fielder's left, aiming for a spot just outside the left cone.
  2. 2The fielder shuffles quickly to the ball, fields it cleanly with two hands or a one-hand gather if skilled, and brings it up to the throwing position.
  3. 3The fielder shuffles back to the athletic stance in the center.
  4. 4The feeder then rolls a ground ball to the fielder's right, aiming just outside the right cone.
  5. 5The fielder shuffles quickly to the ball, fields it cleanly, and brings it up to the throwing position.
  6. 6The fielder shuffles back to the center, ready for the next ball.
  7. 7Repeat the sequence, alternating sides.

Coaching cues

  • Stay low through the ball
  • Soft hands, firm wrists
  • Work through the ball with your feet
  • Glove out front
  • Quick feet, quick hands

Common mistakes

  • Standing too tall, not bending at the knees and hips.
  • Stopping feet before fielding the ball, leading to a stiff body.
  • Stabbing at the ball with the glove rather than working through it.
  • Not getting the glove out in front of the body, fielding the ball too close to the feet.
  • Lazy or slow lateral shuffling, leading to poor fielding angles.

Progressions

  • Increase the speed at which the feeder rolls the balls.
  • Vary the hops by rolling more erratic ground balls or short hops.
  • After fielding, have the player make a quick, accurate throw to a target or another coach.
  • Reduce the distance between the cones to challenge quick changes of direction.
