Title
Fielders practice the pre-pitch ready position and hop timing, staying on the balls of their feet and moving in sync with the pitcher's delivery to stay alert and balanced.
Compilation
If this video stacks several distinct drills back-to-back, split it into individual, draggable drills — each with its own clip, steps, and tags.
Coach's take
Great for building: Pre-pitch timing, dynamic ready stance, and reactive footwork.
Builds toward Reacting explosively to batted balls off the bat by consistently being in a dynamic, balanced position.
What it is
Player starts in a ready position with weight on the balls of the feet, knees bent, and elbows on knees. Coach tosses a ball underhand, and the fielder hops/lands feet into the ground as the ball reaches the coach's glove, maintaining focus on the ball throughout. The drill emphasizes staying off the heels and ready to move in any direction before and as the pitch arrives.
What it practices
Develops pre-pitch positioning awareness, hop timing with pitch delivery, and consistent ready-position mechanics. Builds the habit of staying on the balls of the feet and maintaining athletic posture with elbows-on-knees positioning to lower the center of gravity.
Focuses on improving
Targets infielders who are caught flat-footed or on their heels during live play, reducing reaction errors. Builds mental focus and readiness for ground balls by creating a repeatable pre-pitch routine that keeps players locked in for every pitch in a game.
How to run it
3 sets of 10-15 reps per player.Setup
- 1Set up a player on a bucket or elevated surface about 10-15 feet from a coach.
- 2The coach stands facing the player with a baseball and glove.
- 3Player puts on their glove and gets into a relaxed ready position.
Run the drill
- 1Coach tosses the baseball straight up into the air with their bare hand.
- 2As the baseball begins its descent, the coach catches the ball with their glove.
- 3At the exact moment the ball makes contact with the coach's glove, the player on the bucket lands their feet softly onto the ground, focusing on landing on the balls of their feet.
- 4Player then resets to the elevated position for the next rep.
Coaching cues
- "Eyes on the ball!"
- "Land soft!"
- "Be athletic!"
- "Balls of your feet!"
Common mistakes
- Landing flat-footed or on heels, reducing explosive movement capability.
- Not timing the landing with the ball hitting the coach's glove.
- Not watching the ball's trajectory, leading to delayed reactions.
Progressions
- Remove the bucket, have players perform the prep step from the ground.
- Add a direction cue (left, right, forward) immediately after landing for a quick first step.
- Have players shuffle or sprint a short distance after the prep step.

[00:01] is we're just going to talk about fielding we're going to talk at the [00:02] fielding we're going to talk at the proper fielding position [00:03] proper fielding position but we're going to talk about how to get [00:05] but we're going to talk about how to get into the proper fielding position [00:08] into the proper fielding position but also what do we do prior to [00:11] but also what do we do prior to actually fielding the ground ball or [00:12] actually fielding the ground ball or catching the ball so we're going to take [00:14] catching the ball so we're going to take quinn and we're going to talk about the [00:16] quinn and we're going to talk about the pre-pitch positioning or the prep step [00:18] pre-pitch positioning or the prep step that's how we get ready before and as [00:21] that's how we get ready before and as the ball's getting [00:22] the ball's getting delivered to the plate so we want to [00:24] delivered to the plate so we want to make sure that [00:25] make sure that we are not on our heels this is one of [00:27] we are not on our heels this is one of the positions that we were taught [00:28] the positions that we were taught when we were little they said this was [00:30] when we were little they said this was the best position to be in well [00:32] the best position to be in well this is not really that good of a [00:33] this is not really that good of a position okay it looks like we're ready [00:35] position okay it looks like we're ready but the weight's on our heels and we're [00:37] but the weight's on our heels and we're not ready to move [00:39] not ready to move so what we want to do is almost like [00:40] so what we want to do is almost like think of ourselves like you watch a [00:42] think of ourselves like you watch a tennis player they're getting ready to [00:44] tennis player they're getting ready to to return a serve that's 114 120 miles [00:47] to return a serve that's 114 120 miles an hour [00:47] an hour they're on their balls to their feet [00:49] they're on their balls to their feet they're getting side to side and as the [00:51] they're getting side to side and as the ball is being struck by the tennis [00:53] ball is being struck by the tennis racquet [00:53] racquet they're hopping so that they can then [00:55] they're hopping so that they can then move into either direction that they [00:57] move into either direction that they want to go [00:57] want to go through so what we're going to do with [00:59] through so what we're going to do with quinn right here we're going to get into [01:01] quinn right here we're going to get into the ready position we're going to get [01:02] the ready position we're going to get ready [01:03] ready and i'm going to take a ball i'm going [01:06] and i'm going to take a ball i'm going to toss it up [01:07] to toss it up right when it hits my glove quinn's [01:09] right when it hits my glove quinn's going to be [01:10] going to be landing his feet onto the ground so he's [01:12] landing his feet onto the ground so he's going to watch the flow of the ball [01:14] going to watch the flow of the ball and as it's going up once it lands he's [01:17] and as it's going up once it lands he's then going to hop so watch here we go [01:19] then going to hop so watch here we go ready boom he's in his position he's [01:21] ready boom he's in his position he's watching the baseball [01:23] watching the baseball i can keep on talking and he's just [01:25] i can keep on talking and he's just watching one thing [01:26] watching one thing he's watching the ball 114 pitches a [01:29] he's watching the ball 114 pitches a game [01:29] game this happens 114 times a game most [01:33] this happens 114 times a game most errors are made [01:34] errors are made when kids aren't paying attention the [01:36] when kids aren't paying attention the balls hit they hear the ball hit the bat [01:38] balls hit they hear the ball hit the bat and then they're reacting so we have to [01:40] and then they're reacting so we have to make sure for 114 times [01:42] make sure for 114 times our players are doing this all game long [01:45] our players are doing this all game long so that's the pre-pitch position that's [01:47] so that's the pre-pitch position that's a great way to get all 12 of your kids [01:49] a great way to get all 12 of your kids have them locked in on making sure that [01:52] have them locked in on making sure that when the ball is in the air [01:53] when the ball is in the air they're all hopping so that's the [01:55] they're all hopping so that's the pre-pitch position now we're going to [01:57] pre-pitch position now we're going to talk about the fielding position [01:59] talk about the fielding position okay one of the easiest ways to teach [02:01] okay one of the easiest ways to teach this is we want to put our elbows on our [02:03] this is we want to put our elbows on our knees [02:05] knees so if we put our elbows on our knees [02:07] so if we put our elbows on our knees this kind of makes sure [02:09] this kind of makes sure that our butt's out and our body is down [02:12] that our butt's out and our body is down okay we're going to take our hands and [02:14] okay we're going to take our hands and we're going to dart them out in front of [02:15] we're going to dart them out in front of us [02:16] us we had a good question the other day [02:18] we had a good question the other day does anybody use the alligator anymore [02:20] does anybody use the alligator anymore do people still do the alligator some [02:22] do people still do the alligator some guys didn't even know what the alligator [02:23] guys didn't even know what the alligator was [02:24] was what the alligator is is when this hand [02:27] what the alligator is is when this hand is directly on top like you're chomping [02:29] is directly on top like you're chomping down like an alligator's mouth [02:31] down like an alligator's mouth this is what the alligator move is we [02:33] this is what the alligator move is we used to teach this for years because it [02:34] used to teach this for years because it was the easiest thing [02:36] was the easiest thing to get the players to understand [02:37] to get the players to understand alligator mouth put the lid on the pot [02:40] alligator mouth put the lid on the pot one hand over top chomp down on the ball [02:42] one hand over top chomp down on the ball eat the ball an [02:43] eat the ball an easy way for a younger ball player to [02:46] easy way for a younger ball player to understand [02:47] understand how to catch the ball with two hands a [02:49] how to catch the ball with two hands a more advanced way to do it is [02:51] more advanced way to do it is it's like 11 o'clock one o'clock if you [02:53] it's like 11 o'clock one o'clock if you were to take your arm [02:55] were to take your arm and kind of relax it this is what would [02:56] and kind of relax it this is what would happen my thumb would be more in 11 [02:58] happen my thumb would be more in 11 o'clock motion [03:00] o'clock motion and my arm is a little bit in this [03:01] and my arm is a little bit in this position so i'm a little bit staggered [03:04] position so i'm a little bit staggered in this direction here so that's where [03:06] in this direction here so that's where we're actually gonna field but [03:07] we're actually gonna field but there's nothing wrong with teaching the [03:09] there's nothing wrong with teaching the younger guys what the alligator is [03:11] younger guys what the alligator is because their gloves down now if you [03:14] because their gloves down now if you actually get into this position and you [03:16] actually get into this position and you watch me [03:17] watch me my muscles are getting tense when i'm in [03:19] my muscles are getting tense when i'm in this position [03:20] this position i can't move that well and i'm getting [03:21] i can't move that well and i'm getting stuck okay [03:23] stuck okay once i go like this it makes it that [03:25] once i go like this it makes it that much easier to field [03:26] much easier to field and it's an easier move so that's what [03:29] and it's an easier move so that's what the alligator is [03:30] the alligator is there's nothing there's nothing wrong [03:31] there's nothing there's nothing wrong with teaching that and then guys you're [03:33] with teaching that and then guys you're just going to kind of tilt over into the [03:34] just going to kind of tilt over into the other way so [03:35] other way so that's the fielding position um what [03:38] that's the fielding position um what we're going to do is [03:39] we're going to do is we're actually going to walk over to the [03:41] we're actually going to walk over to the balls and we're going to do this [03:42] balls and we're going to do this straight line [03:43] straight line we'll do a straight line drill first so [03:45] we'll do a straight line drill first so we talked about how to field it [03:47] we talked about how to field it how to get into our position let's go [03:49] how to get into our position let's go quinn so we're going to go from [03:51] quinn so we're going to go from standing up in our relaxed position once [03:53] standing up in our relaxed position once i clap my hands [03:55] i clap my hands quinn's going to go right down into the [03:56] quinn's going to go right down into the position ready we're up we're nice and [03:58] position ready we're up we're nice and relaxed [03:59] relaxed and ready we're up we're nice and [04:02] and ready we're up we're nice and relaxed and [04:04] relaxed and and you can do this with your entire [04:05] and you can do this with your entire team have them all get into a sunlight [04:07] team have them all get into a sunlight circle [04:07] circle make sure they're getting into a good [04:09] make sure they're getting into a good position to start with okay a lot of [04:11] position to start with okay a lot of times with the younger guys [04:12] times with the younger guys an easy way is to draw [04:16] an easy way is to draw and create a triangle they call it the [04:18] and create a triangle they call it the triangle because my feet are the base of [04:20] triangle because my feet are the base of the triangle [04:21] the triangle and my glove goes on the tip this is [04:23] and my glove goes on the tip this is going to almost force [04:25] going to almost force the alligator position we want to take [04:28] the alligator position we want to take where our shoulder [04:29] where our shoulder is and draw a straight line so it's [04:32] is and draw a straight line so it's inside [04:32] inside our left knee our gloves relaxed so [04:35] our left knee our gloves relaxed so that's where [04:36] that's where that other position that more advanced [04:38] that other position that more advanced position we're going to be so it's more [04:40] position we're going to be so it's more left eye that's where we ultimately want [04:42] left eye that's where we ultimately want to feel the baseball because that way [04:45] to feel the baseball because that way it's much easier to fire my body and get [04:47] it's much easier to fire my body and get myself going [04:48] myself going towards first base so so we hear a lot [04:50] towards first base so so we hear a lot of coaches say charge the ball [04:52] of coaches say charge the ball but charge the ball to a little kid [04:54] but charge the ball to a little kid might mean sprint right at it [04:55] might mean sprint right at it all right so we got a couple drills here [04:57] all right so we got a couple drills here to demonstrate what charging the ball [04:58] to demonstrate what charging the ball means [04:59] means and what kind of moving towards the [05:01] and what kind of moving towards the baseball means baseball our softball and [05:02] baseball means baseball our softball and trying to get as much momentum going [05:04] trying to get as much momentum going towards first base as possible [05:05] towards first base as possible okay because we never want to stop our [05:06] okay because we never want to stop our feet as infielders so we call this drill [05:08] feet as infielders so we call this drill just the line drill i have a line drawn [05:11] just the line drill i have a line drawn in between these three cones here [05:13] in between these three cones here and all we're going to do is i'm going [05:14] and all we're going to do is i'm going to have quinn set up if you guys want to [05:16] to have quinn set up if you guys want to go right in front here you might get a [05:17] go right in front here you might get a better angle [05:19] better angle but we want to we want to have quinn [05:20] but we want to we want to have quinn start with the with the cones [05:22] start with the with the cones and the balls right between his feet so [05:24] and the balls right between his feet so now as he's charging the ball most [05:25] now as he's charging the ball most players when they hear charge the ball [05:27] players when they hear charge the ball they'll sprint right at the ball [05:28] they'll sprint right at the ball and they'll stop when they feel it so [05:29] and they'll stop when they feel it so we're going to try to do is we're going [05:31] we're going to try to do is we're going to stay on the right side of the line [05:33] to stay on the right side of the line until we field it so in super slow [05:35] until we field it so in super slow motion i'm in my ready position my [05:37] motion i'm in my ready position my glove's relaxed [05:38] glove's relaxed i'm gonna work up the right side of the [05:39] i'm gonna work up the right side of the line and as i'm getting ready to field [05:41] line and as i'm getting ready to field it i'm gonna go right [05:43] it i'm gonna go right left and freeze then i'm gonna reset i'm [05:45] left and freeze then i'm gonna reset i'm gonna work up the line [05:47] gonna work up the line right left we're always trying to time [05:49] right left we're always trying to time up every ground ball so that we field it [05:50] up every ground ball so that we field it that ball hits our glove [05:52] that ball hits our glove as our left foot hits the ground okay [05:53] as our left foot hits the ground okay you can get four or five guys put them [05:55] you can get four or five guys put them in a line [05:56] in a line and this that this gets them to [05:57] and this that this gets them to understand how to charge the ball and [05:58] understand how to charge the ball and how to work to the ball [05:59] how to work to the ball to get some momentum going towards first [06:01] to get some momentum going towards first so he's gonna go nice and slow first [06:02] so he's gonna go nice and slow first he's gonna work up the line [06:04] he's gonna work up the line right left field next cone right left [06:07] right left field next cone right left field [06:09] field next one right left field you'll notice [06:11] next one right left field you'll notice his feet are kind of working in like a [06:12] his feet are kind of working in like a circular motion [06:14] circular motion working towards first base the next step [06:17] working towards first base the next step whether you're in the dirt or you're on [06:18] whether you're in the dirt or you're on turf [06:19] turf is i draw another set of lines here [06:23] is i draw another set of lines here for the next step so we go right left [06:25] for the next step so we go right left field and then the next step is right [06:27] field and then the next step is right left throw [06:28] left throw so in slow motion it's going to look [06:29] so in slow motion it's going to look like this right left field [06:32] like this right left field right left throw and my feet always work [06:34] right left throw and my feet always work towards my target again i'm working up [06:35] towards my target again i'm working up the line [06:36] the line right left field right left throw so [06:38] right left field right left throw so he's going to demonstrate it [06:49] right left right left and this is a great drill to do [06:50] great drill to do first day of practice to get your guys [06:51] first day of practice to get your guys to understand what it means to charge [06:53] to understand what it means to charge the ball [06:54] the ball what it means for left foot timing or [06:56] what it means for left foot timing or how to time up that ground ball every [06:57] how to time up that ground ball every time it's hit to us [06:59] time it's hit to us once your players understand the line [07:00] once your players understand the line drill and how to really work through the [07:02] drill and how to really work through the ball [07:03] ball we have the three cone drill we do this [07:05] we have the three cone drill we do this one a lot so me as a coach i'm gonna [07:06] one a lot so me as a coach i'm gonna have a line of [07:07] have a line of four or five guys quinn's going to set [07:09] four or five guys quinn's going to set up right behind the last cone [07:12] up right behind the last cone what quinn's going to do just like that [07:13] what quinn's going to do just like that drill there we're going to work on [07:14] drill there we're going to work on getting around the cones [07:16] getting around the cones and then as he's working around i'm [07:17] and then as he's working around i'm going to roll it and he's going to [07:18] going to roll it and he's going to freeze when he feels it [07:20] freeze when he feels it notice again focusing on that left foot [07:22] notice again focusing on that left foot timing let's do it again bud [07:23] timing let's do it again bud so he's going to start in the back he's [07:25] so he's going to start in the back he's going to work around the cones [07:27] going to work around the cones right left freeze perfect so he's always [07:29] right left freeze perfect so he's always timing the ball [07:30] timing the ball up as the left foot's hitting the ground [07:32] up as the left foot's hitting the ground go ahead [07:33] go ahead working around right left perfect now [07:35] working around right left perfect now the next step to this [07:37] the next step to this we will go right left he's going to go [07:38] we will go right left he's going to go right left field and shuffle towards [07:40] right left field and shuffle towards towards first base for the younger guys [07:41] towards first base for the younger guys we call it hopping on the skateboard [07:43] we call it hopping on the skateboard hopping on the surfboard whatever you're [07:44] hopping on the surfboard whatever you're gonna you know whatever's gonna stick [07:46] gonna you know whatever's gonna stick with them to get their feet and [07:47] with them to get their feet and checkpoints lined up at first base [07:49] checkpoints lined up at first base so he's gonna go around it right left [07:50] so he's gonna go around it right left field right left throw perfect [07:53] field right left throw perfect same thing we'll do two more around the [07:56] same thing we'll do two more around the cones [07:57] cones right left field right left good again [07:59] right left field right left good again he's always using two hands [08:01] he's always using two hands and he's feeling it inside his left foot [08:03] and he's feeling it inside his left foot right left field [08:04] right left field right left throw good once you once your [08:05] right left throw good once you once your guys get the concept of the drill [08:07] guys get the concept of the drill you can set up a net and actually have [08:09] you can set up a net and actually have them throw you can go rapid fire [08:10] them throw you can go rapid fire and again it's way more productive [08:12] and again it's way more productive having you know four or five guys doing [08:13] having you know four or five guys doing this drill [08:14] this drill four or five guys doing a line drill [08:16] four or five guys doing a line drill four or five guys doing the [08:17] four or five guys doing the prep step drill or prep step timing [08:19] prep step drill or prep step timing drill ten minutes each [08:21] drill ten minutes each first day of practice instead of just [08:22] first day of practice instead of just assuming they're gonna be able to field [08:23] assuming they're gonna be able to field ground balls [08:24] ground balls and whacking fungos adam on day one [08:27] and whacking fungos adam on day one any questions well first of all the [08:29] any questions well first of all the question is right side of the line is [08:31] question is right side of the line is that for third baseman as well [08:32] that for third baseman as well yeah so that's it's definitely the same [08:34] yeah so that's it's definitely the same for third baseman everything's the exact [08:35] for third baseman everything's the exact exactly the same third base shortstop [08:37] exactly the same third base shortstop and second [08:38] and second for first base it would depend on [08:39] for first base it would depend on whether or not he's a lefty or righty [08:41] whether or not he's a lefty or righty for for a right-handed first baseman if [08:43] for for a right-handed first baseman if he's fielding that ball and going [08:45] he's fielding that ball and going towards first base [08:46] towards first base or he's feeling the ball and getting [08:47] or he's feeling the ball and getting ready to flip to the pitcher who's [08:48] ready to flip to the pitcher who's covering first base [08:49] covering first base i would do the exact same thing a lot of [08:51] i would do the exact same thing a lot of times i tell my first baseman just get [08:52] times i tell my first baseman just get wide [08:53] wide and smother the ball all right we don't [08:54] and smother the ball all right we don't have to get a ton of momentum going [08:56] have to get a ton of momentum going towards our target [08:57] towards our target we don't have to be too pretty okay i [08:59] we don't have to be too pretty okay i tell first baseman nice and wide [09:00] tell first baseman nice and wide you can feel it out in front with one [09:02] you can feel it out in front with one hand you can feel it with two but for my [09:04] hand you can feel it with two but for my righties i would say the same thing we [09:05] righties i would say the same thing we kind of work around the ball [09:06] kind of work around the ball we go right left field and then we might [09:08] we go right left field and then we might be flipping to that pitcher [09:09] be flipping to that pitcher covering the bag for lefties it's just [09:11] covering the bag for lefties it's just the opposite so if i'm a lefty i'm gonna [09:13] the opposite so if i'm a lefty i'm gonna try to demonstrate this with a righty [09:14] try to demonstrate this with a righty glove [09:15] glove it would be the same thing but the [09:16] it would be the same thing but the opposite direction so i would work up [09:18] opposite direction so i would work up the left side of the line i would go [09:20] the left side of the line i would go left right field [09:21] left right field get the ball out and then flip it to my [09:23] get the ball out and then flip it to my pitcher [09:24] pitcher perfect any other ones [09:27] perfect any other ones another drill we love to do you guys [09:28] another drill we love to do you guys come on over here for your players that [09:30] come on over here for your players that get a little bit more advanced we love [09:31] get a little bit more advanced we love using the paddles [09:33] using the paddles so quinn's gonna put this paddle on his [09:34] so quinn's gonna put this paddle on his hand i think we get these things for [09:36] hand i think we get these things for like 15 bucks online they're super cheap [09:38] like 15 bucks online they're super cheap but they're really good at teaching your [09:39] but they're really good at teaching your players how to secure the ball with two [09:42] players how to secure the ball with two hands [09:42] hands um a lot of times as your players get [09:44] um a lot of times as your players get older we want to teach them not to catch [09:45] older we want to teach them not to catch the ball as infielders [09:46] the ball as infielders but to stop the ball all right so this [09:49] but to stop the ball all right so this is a tough one we're just gonna roll out [09:50] is a tough one we're just gonna roll out first so quinn's gonna get to his ready [09:51] first so quinn's gonna get to his ready position [09:52] position you're just gonna feel it and toss it [09:53] you're just gonna feel it and toss it right back to me so nice and wide two [09:55] right back to me so nice and wide two hands [09:55] hands and he's just gonna pitch it right back [09:57] and he's just gonna pitch it right back so once your players get used to [09:59] so once your players get used to securing the ball with this [10:00] securing the ball with this focusing on using two hands you can do [10:02] focusing on using two hands you can do double plays with it you can roll out [10:04] double plays with it you can roll out ground balls and have them throw it to [10:05] ground balls and have them throw it to first base but again it focuses on that [10:07] first base but again it focuses on that left foot timing and timing it up [10:10] left foot timing and timing it up when the left foot hits the ground that [10:11] when the left foot hits the ground that ball is hitting the paddle and they're [10:13] ball is hitting the paddle and they're securing the ball with two hands [10:15] securing the ball with two hands that's a great one another great drill [10:17] that's a great one another great drill we do we use cones a lot guys [10:20] we do we use cones a lot guys just because it kind of gives them a [10:21] just because it kind of gives them a runway or [10:23] runway or you know certain angles to take [10:24] you know certain angles to take depending on where the balls hit [10:26] depending on where the balls hit so to practice backhands i'm gonna have [10:28] so to practice backhands i'm gonna have quinn set up at this front cone right [10:30] quinn set up at this front cone right here [10:31] here and you'll notice i have the cone set up [10:32] and you'll notice i have the cone set up on an angle going deeper the reason we [10:33] on an angle going deeper the reason we do that [10:34] do that is because that ball is hit hard to our [10:36] is because that ball is hit hard to our right or hard to our left [10:38] right or hard to our left we want to take deeper angles to give [10:39] we want to take deeper angles to give ourselves more time to field it so [10:41] ourselves more time to field it so if i'm playing shortstop and there's a [10:43] if i'm playing shortstop and there's a rocket hit to my right [10:44] rocket hit to my right i don't want to just sprint straight [10:46] i don't want to just sprint straight across the deeper i go the more [10:48] across the deeper i go the more more time i have to feel the ball so [10:49] more time i have to feel the ball so just to simulate it in slow motion [10:51] just to simulate it in slow motion we're going to get to our ready position [10:52] we're going to get to our ready position we're going to prep step he's going to [10:54] we're going to prep step he's going to open up with the right foot take a [10:55] open up with the right foot take a deeper [10:56] deeper angle and there's really two ways to [10:58] angle and there's really two ways to feel backhands [10:59] feel backhands the first one with our feet lined up [11:01] the first one with our feet lined up with first base [11:03] with first base i love this one because from the time i [11:04] i love this one because from the time i feel that my feet are set [11:06] feel that my feet are set and then i push straight through towards [11:08] and then i push straight through towards first are there going to be times where [11:10] first are there going to be times where we fielded off our left foot absolutely [11:12] we fielded off our left foot absolutely especially if we're on the run and [11:13] especially if we're on the run and that's in that scenario we'll just field [11:15] that's in that scenario we'll just field off our left [11:16] off our left we'll replace our feet and get going [11:18] we'll replace our feet and get going towards first base so [11:19] towards first base so we'll just work on the first one here so [11:21] we'll just work on the first one here so quinn you want to try to feel it inside [11:22] quinn you want to try to feel it inside your right foot [11:24] your right foot yep so you're starting at the front cone [11:25] yep so you're starting at the front cone you can back up a little bit i'm gonna [11:27] you can back up a little bit i'm gonna roll it to his backhand he's gonna get [11:28] roll it to his backhand he's gonna get there [11:29] there set up shuffle right towards first base [11:36] he's gonna open up perfect the idea here guys is sprint to the spot [11:38] the idea here guys is sprint to the spot try to beat the ball there [11:40] try to beat the ball there and get those feet set up perfect [11:43] and get those feet set up perfect you'll see a lot of players get to your [11:45] you'll see a lot of players get to your backhand position [11:47] backhand position right over here you'll see a lot of [11:49] right over here you'll see a lot of players their feet are great [11:50] players their feet are great right his feet right now are lined up [11:53] right his feet right now are lined up with first base [11:54] with first base but a lot of infielders when they go to [11:56] but a lot of infielders when they go to field the backhand their glove works in [11:58] field the backhand their glove works in the same direction that the [11:59] the same direction that the that their feet are lined up with but [12:01] that their feet are lined up with but the ball's traveling on this line [12:03] the ball's traveling on this line so put both feet on that line for me [12:05] so put both feet on that line for me perfect when we feel the backhand get a [12:07] perfect when we feel the backhand get a little bit lower [12:08] little bit lower we want our glove to work back through [12:10] we want our glove to work back through the same direction [12:11] the same direction that the ball's traveling we don't want [12:13] that the ball's traveling we don't want the ball to be traveling in this [12:14] the ball to be traveling in this direction and quinn's glove to be [12:15] direction and quinn's glove to be working that way [12:17] working that way there's not much room for error there so [12:18] there's not much room for error there so we want our glove just a slight push [12:20] we want our glove just a slight push back through the same direction that the [12:22] back through the same direction that the ball is traveling [12:24] ball is traveling any questions yeah there was a question [12:27] any questions yeah there was a question here [12:28] here about asking about glove work are you [12:31] about asking about glove work are you going to actually talk [12:32] going to actually talk i know you're talking about footwork but [12:34] i know you're talking about footwork but are you all going to go over glove [12:36] are you all going to go over glove position [12:37] position when fielding a ground ball as in out in [12:39] when fielding a ground ball as in out in front with palm [12:40] front with palm not up and more perpendicular to the [12:42] not up and more perpendicular to the ground and pushing through the ball [12:43] ground and pushing through the ball yeah that's perfect quinn go on both [12:45] yeah that's perfect quinn go on both knees right here for me [12:46] knees right here for me just facing me so that's a great [12:49] just facing me so that's a great question a lot of infielders [12:51] question a lot of infielders logan murray great question logan thank [12:53] logan murray great question logan thank you so separate your features a little [12:54] you so separate your features a little bit [12:55] bit a great way to work on glove work in the [12:57] a great way to work on glove work in the beginning of practice is have guys [12:58] beginning of practice is have guys partner up [12:59] partner up and have them work on tossing the ball [13:01] and have them work on tossing the ball back and forth so what we'll do first [13:02] back and forth so what we'll do first we'll actually go with a bare hand a lot [13:04] we'll actually go with a bare hand a lot of young players when they field ground [13:06] of young players when they field ground balls [13:06] balls they tend to scoop underneath the ball [13:09] they tend to scoop underneath the ball and the back of their glove is on the [13:10] and the back of their glove is on the ground [13:10] ground but if i do that my glove looks like a [13:13] but if i do that my glove looks like a ramp [13:14] ramp all right so that ball might slide [13:15] all right so that ball might slide straight up and pop out what we like to [13:17] straight up and pop out what we like to do [13:17] do is take the heel of our hand or our [13:19] is take the heel of our hand or our wrist and push it forward just a little [13:21] wrist and push it forward just a little bit so now you'll see the fingers on my [13:22] bit so now you'll see the fingers on my glover [13:23] glover are hanging straight down now i'm able [13:25] are hanging straight down now i'm able to push [13:27] to push back through that short hop a lot better [13:28] back through that short hop a lot better so for quinn and i we're going to get to [13:30] so for quinn and i we're going to get to a nice athletic position [13:31] a nice athletic position butt's up chest is down and we're just [13:33] butt's up chest is down and we're just gonna use our glove hand right here [13:34] gonna use our glove hand right here and all we're gonna do is work through [13:37] and all we're gonna do is work through that routine ground ball [13:39] that routine ground ball and try to push push back through the [13:40] and try to push push back through the short hop this is a great progression to [13:42] short hop this is a great progression to do at the beginning of practice [13:43] do at the beginning of practice and i love doing bare hand work because [13:45] and i love doing bare hand work because if you can do it bare handed you can [13:46] if you can do it bare handed you can definitely do it with your glove [13:48] definitely do it with your glove so we'll do five in front and then we're [13:49] so we'll do five in front and then we're gonna angle to the left so angle that [13:51] gonna angle to the left so angle that the other way for me now we're gonna [13:53] the other way for me now we're gonna work on four hands so we're just gonna [13:55] work on four hands so we're just gonna push through nice and soft [13:56] push through nice and soft awesome we wanna try to catch the ball [13:58] awesome we wanna try to catch the ball on our fingertips and make sure when [14:00] on our fingertips and make sure when your players are doing it they don't do [14:01] your players are doing it they don't do that we don't want to scoop underneath [14:02] that we don't want to scoop underneath it we want to push [14:03] it we want to push soft right back through good nice and [14:07] soft right back through good nice and soft [14:07] soft chest is down a little bit lower quinn [14:09] chest is down a little bit lower quinn there we go awesome last one [14:12] there we go awesome last one and think about burying your head behind [14:14] and think about burying your head behind your glove when you do this now we're [14:15] your glove when you do this now we're going to switch to backhand this one's [14:16] going to switch to backhand this one's tougher [14:16] tougher think about taking your thumb and your [14:18] think about taking your thumb and your pointer finger below the ball [14:20] pointer finger below the ball if your arm straight that means you're [14:22] if your arm straight that means you're not low enough if we're low enough [14:23] not low enough if we're low enough we're going to have a little flex in our [14:25] we're going to have a little flex in our elbow and we want to think about [14:27] elbow and we want to think about pushing through like our elbow is a [14:28] pushing through like our elbow is a hinge not our shoulder [14:30] hinge not our shoulder okay so we're down low perfect and we're [14:33] okay so we're down low perfect and we're gonna push back through try to bury your [14:35] gonna push back through try to bury your head behind your glove [14:40] that's all right so if you miss it we should miss it right back towards our [14:42] should miss it right back towards our partner [14:42] partner we shouldn't miss it and do one of these [14:44] we shouldn't miss it and do one of these and scoop underneath it [14:46] and scoop underneath it so again bend from the elbow use your [14:47] so again bend from the elbow use your elbow like it's a hinge [14:49] elbow like it's a hinge and we're gonna push back through once [14:51] and we're gonna push back through once you do five of each then you can get the [14:53] you do five of each then you can get the glove you can go on both knees [14:54] glove you can go on both knees then you can go actually on your feet [14:57] then you can go actually on your feet and and do the same drill but a great [14:59] and and do the same drill but a great warm-up drill to get your guys going [15:01] warm-up drill to get your guys going coach steve we've got one question by uh [15:02] coach steve we've got one question by uh from jeff gustin [15:04] from jeff gustin jeff gustin said backhands are tough [15:05] jeff gustin said backhands are tough because they think all balls to the [15:07] because they think all balls to the right [15:08] right should be backhands but that's not true [15:10] should be backhands but that's not true is it no definitely not [15:12] is it no definitely not good question jeff i would say read the [15:14] good question jeff i would say read the read the pace of the ball [15:15] read the pace of the ball and you as a coach when you're rolling [15:17] and you as a coach when you're rolling out back hands you can you can roll a [15:19] out back hands you can you can roll a couple soft too because any ball that's [15:20] couple soft too because any ball that's soft hit if we can get around it we want [15:22] soft hit if we can get around it we want to try to get around it [15:23] to try to get around it so you know as a coach hitting ground [15:24] so you know as a coach hitting ground balls or rolling out ground balls while [15:26] balls or rolling out ground balls while you're doing this drill [15:27] you're doing this drill mix in a couple soft ones and then your [15:29] mix in a couple soft ones and then your players will understand [15:31] players will understand the softer the pace of the ball the more [15:32] the softer the pace of the ball the more we want to work through it and try to [15:34] we want to work through it and try to get in front of it
