Title
Fielders work lateral movement and ground-ball footwork through agility-ring stations before fielding live ground balls.
Compilation
If this video stacks several distinct drills back-to-back, split it into individual, draggable drills — each with its own clip, steps, and tags.
Coach's take
Great for building: Consistent low fielding posture and lateral glove-side footwork for clean ground ball reception.
Builds toward Fielding hard-hit ground balls to either side with clean transfers and quick throws, maintaining body control.
What it is
Players move laterally through agility rings on the ground, stepping in and out of the rings in sequence. After completing the footwork pattern, they field a ground ball rolling toward them from a live toss or roll. The drill chains lateral quickness reps with immediate fielding application.
What it practices
Lateral foot speed and ring footwork for infielders, quick transition from agility work into ground-ball fielding posture and glove work.
Focuses on improving
Builds lateral range and first-step quickness for infielders who struggle to reach balls up the middle or charge slow rollers. Trains the legs to move independently from the fielding motion.
How to run it
2-3 sets of 10-15 reps (5-7 per side) for each player.Setup
- 1Place 4-6 hexagonal agility rings in a straight line, approximately 4-5 feet apart.
- 2Place one baseball 2-3 feet in front and slightly to the right of each agility ring.
- 3Each player stands inside an agility ring, facing forward with their glove ready.
- 4The coach stands in front of the line of players, ready to roll ground balls.
Run the drill
- 1Coach rolls a ground ball to the player's glove side (e.g., right for a right-handed thrower).
- 2Player takes a shuffle or crossover step out of the ring to reach the ball.
- 3Player gets into a low fielding position, presenting the glove out front and flat to the ground.
- 4Player fields the ball cleanly and secures it.
- 5Player shuffles back into the agility ring to reset.
- 6Coach rolls a ground ball to the player's opposite side, repeating steps 2-5.
Coaching cues
- Stay low!
- Glove out front!
- Quick feet!
- Flat glove to the ground!
- Eyes on the ball!
Common mistakes
- Standing too tall, bending only at the waist.
- Reaching with the glove instead of moving feet to the ball.
- Not getting the glove completely flat on the ground.
- Looking up too early after fielding the ball.
- Crossing feet over incorrectly, losing balance.
Progressions
- Increase the distance the ball is rolled from the ring.
- Have players make a quick throw after fielding into a net or to a partner.
- Vary the speed and angle of the rolled ground balls.
- Introduce a second ball per ring, requiring two quick consecutive fields.
