Title
Infielders shuffle laterally through cones to build quick feet and directional footwork for ground-ball range and positioning.
Compilation
If this video stacks several distinct drills back-to-back, split it into individual, draggable drills — each with its own clip, steps, and tags.
Coach's take
Great for building: Lateral agility, quick-twitch footwork, and getting into a low, athletic fielding posture.
Builds toward Consistently moving feet to get in front of ground balls and securing the ball with proper body position, allowing for quicker transfers and throws.
What it is
Players set up in an infield stance and shuffle laterally through a series of cones placed in a line or pattern on the ground. The drill emphasizes explosive lateral movement, staying low, and maintaining athletic posture throughout the shuffle sequence. No ball contact is involved; the focus is pure footwork and conditioning under game-speed pressure.
What it practices
Lateral agility and first-step quickness for ground-ball pursuit. Builds lower-body strength and hip flexibility required to field balls across the chest and backhand.
Focuses on improving
Develops range and lateral mobility for infielders who struggle with balls hit to their left or right. Trains explosive footwork to close distance on ground balls and position the glove for clean short-hop fielding.
How to run it
2-3 sets of 5-7 shuffles in each direction, simulating a field at each end.Setup
- 1Place 5-7 cones in a straight line, approximately 3 feet apart.
- 2Player starts at one end of the cone line in an athletic ready stance.
Run the drill
- 1Shuffle laterally, leading with the outside foot, through the cones while maintaining a low, athletic base.
- 2Upon reaching the last cone, drop into a fielding position, bringing the glove out in front to simulate receiving a ground ball.
- 3Immediately shuffle back through the cones to the starting point, repeating the fielding action at the other end.
Coaching cues
- Stay low!
- Quick feet, soft hands!
- Glove out front!
- Body in front of the ball!
- Athletic stance!
Common mistakes
- Standing too tall while shuffling or fielding.
- Crossing feet instead of shuffling laterally.
- Not getting the glove down early enough.
- Reaching for the ball instead of moving the feet to get in position.
Progressions
- Add a tennis ball or wiffle ball to be rolled to the player at each end.
- Reduce cone spacing to increase foot quickness.
- Add a simulated throw after fielding the imaginary ball.
