Title
Infielders field ground balls and execute a rapid glove-to-throw transition under game-speed conditions.
Compilation
If this video stacks several distinct drills back-to-back, split it into individual, draggable drills — each with its own clip, steps, and tags.
Coach's take
Great for building: Quick glove-to-hand transfer and accurate throwing mechanics immediately after fielding a ground ball.
Builds toward Making quick, accurate throws from the infield after fielding, enabling outs on faster runners and completing double plays efficiently.
What it is
A coach rolls or hits ground balls to infielders positioned on the field. Players field the ball cleanly with soft hands, make a quick glove-to-throw transfer, and fire the ball to a base or target. The emphasis is on minimizing dead time between fielding and release.
What it practices
Glove-to-throw transition speed and footwork on ground balls. Soft hands on the approach and quick hand exchange to reduce throwing-release lag.
Focuses on improving
Targets infielders who field the ball cleanly but lose time on the exchange, delaying throws and affecting double-play feeds or base-path outs. Builds tournament-ready reflexes for rapid ball-to-hand-to-throw sequences.
How to run it
5-10 reps per player, then rotate positions.Setup
- 1Place cones in a line, approximately 5-7 feet apart, for players to stand behind.
- 2Place a bucket 5-10 feet directly in front of each cone.
- 3The coach stands 10-15 feet in front of the line of cones, facing the players, with a bucket full of baseballs.
- 4Players line up behind the cones, wearing their gloves.
Run the drill
- 1The coach rolls a soft ground ball towards the first player in line.
- 2The player fields the ball with soft hands, moving through it towards the bucket.
- 3The player quickly transfers the ball from their glove to their throwing hand.
- 4The player makes an accurate throw into the bucket in front of them.
- 5The next player in line then takes their turn, or the same player resets for another rep.
Coaching cues
- Attack the ball.
- Soft hands, flat glove.
- Funnel to the belly button.
- Quick transfer, get rid of it.
- Aim for the bucket, chest high.
Common mistakes
- Stiff hands, causing the ball to bounce off the glove.
- Standing upright, not getting low to field the ball out front.
- Slow transfer from glove to throwing hand, delaying the throw.
- Inaccurate throws, missing the bucket or throwing too hard.
- Not moving feet through the ball after fielding.
Progressions
- Increase the distance the coach rolls the ball from.
- Increase the speed or difficulty of the rolled ground balls (e.g., short hops).
- Add a second bucket to simulate throwing to another base or completing a double play.
- Have players field the ball then take a shuffle step before throwing.
