Title
Fielders field ground balls and execute a rapid glove-to-throw exchange on a three-count cadence to build rhythm and transition speed.
Compilation
If this video stacks several distinct drills back-to-back, split it into individual, draggable drills — each with its own clip, steps, and tags.
Coach's take
Great for building: Efficient ground ball fielding technique and glove-to-hand throwing transition footwork.
Builds toward Making quick, accurate throws to first base after fielding a ground ball, leading to more outs.
What it is
A coach hits or rolls ground balls to fielders who receive the ball, transition from glove to throwing hand, and complete a throw on a rhythmic three-count cadence. The "three, two, one, change" count cues fielders to field, secure, and release the ball within a timed sequence. Reps are done continuously to ingrain the footwork and exchange timing.
What it practices
Glove-to-throw transition timing and consistency. Fielding-throwing exchange rhythm and ground ball footwork under cadence pressure.
Focuses on improving
Builds automaticity in the fielding-throwing transition for infielders who hesitate on the exchange or lack rhythm between fielding and release.
How to run it
3 sets of 10-15 reps per player.Setup
- 1Place two agility squares (e.g., yellow and red) about 3-4 feet apart in a line.
- 2Player stands in a ready athletic stance behind the first square (yellow).
- 3Place a baseball or soft practice ball on the ground in front of the yellow square.
- 4Each player wears a baseball glove.
Run the drill
- 1Player gets into fielding position, moving hands through the ball to secure it.
- 2Secure the ball in the glove and transfer it to the throwing hand.
- 3Shuffle feet, stepping into the second square (red) to get aligned for a throw.
- 4Simulate a throwing motion, arm up and body rotated, but hold the ball.
- 5Return to the starting position for the next rep.
Coaching cues
- Glove out front.
- Eyes on the ball.
- Low to high through the ball.
- Quick feet to throw.
- Right, left, throw (for right-handers).
- Left, right, throw (for left-handers).
- Strong front shoulder.
Common mistakes
- Fielding the ball upright without bending knees.
- Not attacking the ball with the glove out front.
- Slow transfer from glove to throwing hand.
- Improper footwork for throwing alignment (e.g., not squaring up to target).
- No dynamic finish into the throwing motion, standing straight up.
Progressions
- Have a coach roll the ball to the player instead of placing it.
- Add a target for players to actually throw to.
- Increase the distance between the squares to emphasize longer shuffle steps or a crow hop.
- Introduce a second ball for a quick exchange drill after the first fielding motion.
